allmusic.com review

Post by blistered monkey »

First of all, ouch.

In the liners for Healthy in Paranoid Times, Our Lady Peace's first studio album in three years, there's a photo of a wall where facts are scrawled. "Within these 1165 days..." it says, referring to the lengthy time it took to record the album, "11 thousand dollars was spent on food for the band." "2000 hours were spent both discussing and playing music." But then the tone changes. "30 active wars were fought across the globe," "54 million people died from extreme poverty." The list goes on, itemizing everything from how many hours OLP spent on airplanes to the number of North American deaths from cancer. Are we supposed to see the futility of rock & roll in the face of international strife and hunger? That's certainly an honorable notion, but it seems sort of ham-fisted, too, mostly because no one made Our Lady Peace take that long to record their album. But it also has very little to do with the music on Healthy in Paranoid Times. Well, in "Wipe That Smile Off Your Face," Raine Maida does use metaphors of wars and bombs to describe a failing relationship, so maybe he's aiming for some connectivity between the music and those suffering phrases on the wall. Healthy is also a much moodier album than 2002's Gravity. The highlights of that record were the Goo Goo Dolls-ish singles "Somewhere Out There" and "Innocent." Here songs have a tendency to drag on — opener "Angels/Losing/Sleep" plods along for nearly five minutes, and even the single "Where Are You" — which otherwise has a peppy guitar line comparable to the Killers — overstays its welcome with an extended "This could be the best day of your life" singalong. But the biggest problem with Healthy in Paranoid Times, besides its inflated thematic framework, is its lack of distinction. Our Lady Peace has proven how good they are at approximating U2's epic scope with modern rock atmospherics. So why did it take them over a 1000 days to do that again? :naughty:

I think it might have gone a tad over the guy's head

I didn't know Raine had a failing relationship with George W.

Chantal will be upset. :(

GWB makes my soul cringe
"How can we justify spending so much on destruction and so little on life?" Matthew Good

"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911

"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good

I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.

"Hold on, hold on children, your mother and father are leaving, hold on, hold on children your best freind's parents are leaving, leaving,.......*AHHH*! " - Death From Above - Black History Month

Interesting review to say the list... the album HAS indeed it´s ups and downs.
Angels Losing Sleep, Will The Future Blame Us, Whipe That Smile Off Your Face, Love And Trust, Apology are basicly the ones that make this record worth buying.

I am okay with a negative review if it is a good review.

This is not. Quite the shame, as allmusic normally has solid reviews.

Wow! What an excellent review. He clearly has taken considerable time and effort when it comes to unravelling the true meaning of Healthy in Paranoid Times. I LOVE how he proves his point that the album clearly sucks by the fact that he thinks the songs are too long.....

This has to be the worst review ever...mainly because the writer clearly didn't consider the circumstances behind the making of the album.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the part where he says that songs like "Angels Losing Sleep" and "Where Are You?" are too repetitive. If he actually stopped and attempted to find the message, he would get why the repetitivity is not really a lack of creativity.
And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
Just like sunny days that
We ignore because
We're all dumb and jaded
And I hope to God I figure out
What's wrong

Plus, he criticizes the booklet. I mean, I was displeased by the lack of lyrics, but for God's sake, you don't listen to a CD for the booklet. Well, I don't. Maybe he does.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

He just mustnt like the band. He has something against them.

From the very begining , he is criticizing things that dont need to be criticized, like the liner notes, their a welcome change from all those liner notes out there that are are carbon copies of each other/

I tend to agree that the songs are a bit long. To me, the verses don't seem overly developed. Raine repeating the same lyric over and over again emphasises the length of the song. I think this is the case for most of the songs, with the exception of Apology and Al Genina - the simplicity there is the key to the songs. But every song seems to end on the repetition of a line or two, and you get the feeling that each song could easily be shorter, and perhaps be better off for it. I love the album, but it's something I noticed as well. Al Genina, which everyone seems to love, is short. Just think, if it was longer and just repeated a verse, it would lose much of it's impact.
This is my story both humble and true,
Take it to pieces and mend it with glue.

i agree, a major reason why al genina is sweet is because it is short.

and i think, yes, almost all the songs do have a lot of repetition in them. if you look at each song as an individual you know that that doesn't impede on the creativity one bit. but collectively, it comes a bit close to being excessive. just close.

I agree the review was pretty irrelevant. It seems to me that the shorter the review is, the higher the proportion of space spent on irrelevant details such as quoting the entire booklet. He has a point about the song length though, that's the one real aspect of the album which annoys me.

If you like positive reviews, check out my review of the album: Healthy In Paranoid Times
