OLP and Religion
OLP and Religion
Does anyone know what religious affiliation the members of OLP have, if any? Some of the songs make me think they could be agnostic or atheist, but I don’t know.
Could anyone point me to an interview or official bio on this subject?

Because I would like to understand their songs/lyrics better. If they are atheist and reference Jesus, I think it would have quite a different connotation then when a fundamentalist mentions Jesus.
I didn’t mean to be noisy or intrusive to the band, I just want to understand them and their music better.

Oh it's one of those threads. *gets out before it all goes to hell* (no pun intended)
Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf
Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...
Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...
So glad you could stay
Forever
He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand
You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..
So glad you could stay
Forever

clowcards you bring up an interesting point. I have also wondered how they feel about religion and society, which often fuels their lyrics. Sometimes its hard to read through Raine's metaphors or in the case of newer material, the vague simplicity of his lyrics.
I think this is a perfectly honest question (when he elaborated fully). He's not trying to get too personal with the band's members, but is simply asking for deeper meanings within the songs. Some of us should be able to help him with that.
Raine sure talks about god alot for being an athiest. "Over your shoulder you have to watch, heaven fall into hell"........That's from Angels Losing Sleep........I think that song's about George Bush realizing he's fucked things up....and Raine's waiting for him to "fall from grace". That's what I gathered from the live version anyways.

This was the closest I could find regarding Raine's take on religion (from his explanation of Starseed):
"The lyrics are my take on religion. I'm into a lot of meditating. My Dad was Catholic and he tried to school me in that, but I never really caught on. I'm always interested in religion and the way it effects society."

I just wanna get out,

actually... I don't think they are religious at all. You can be spiritual, but not religious.
I think Raine is a very spiritual person... but constantly writes about finding spirituality without religion. Look at the songs on Naveed (like Neon Crossing for example)...
A Starseed is a being from another solar system born on Earth as a human to teach humanity a lesson. Read "The Starseed Transmissions" series... I think Raine has admitted to believing in Starseeds... probably beacuse he is one.... among others.
there are countless paths to salvation... religion is just one of them. Religion works for people who are afraid to think for themselves, and need some sort of structure to show them a way.

Well you know what they say about drugs expanding the mind. You wouldn't be the first who mistook someone with a spiritual message as being mightily stoned

If I recall correctly Neon Crossing is about finding one of those flashy or 'Neon' Crosses by a church. A Cross that blended right in with all the neon signs around it.
A tangent on that I just now thought of ...
The Neon Cross blending right in with all the other neon signs in a city.
Like religon is just another advertisement?

I don't mean to be rude. But what the hell? I can think for myself. I can speak for myself. And I am very religious. I don't think you'd like me to say what I think of people who aren't in such a way.
I geuss I'm really just offended by that.

Cass what do you mean by your last statement? I think you have a right to feel insulted about that statement.....it's somewhat undermining...
That quote was saying religion is a crutch.......to some people it is because they follow it blindly without regard. Someone saying "all gay people will go to hell" is a comment I'd expect from a strongly religious person who doesn't question it's foundations. Its that type of attitude that leads to moral superiority and the need to "save people"........I just imagine if god doesn't exist what these people are really doing.........and it's a little scary.
I try and live my life without and ideal or thought of god.....or any repercussion involving heaven and hell. I believe we should be spiritual about what we have here and now.......like the earth and the people and creatures that live on it.
Cass you wouldn't happen to be Mormon would you? I've dated two ex-Mormons and they are very jaded and feel oppressed by the church. Not to mention some other stuff but I'm not gonna get into it here. I'm just curious because I really liked a lot of Mormons......we didn't see eye to eye but I admit some of them were very good people and it was refreshing getting another take on life.

I don't think I like where this thread's gonna head. Or where it's already been.
But I don't know if it should be locked yet or some issues should be resolved first.
