Am I missing something?

Post by Fabio_kun »

I just got the LIVE8 video and checked the tracklist for the new CD, and I realized that I might be missing something.

Who is that guitarrist that played in the LIVE8? wft? stunt member or anything like that?

And I am VERY, I mean VERY disappointed that Not Afraid didn't make the album. I honestly have no clue what is happening with Our Lady Peace, they decided to cut off the ONE song I thought had some potential, and now they come with Where Are You And Vampires... bloody hell.

What did you people think of Raine in the LIVE8 performance?

Thanks.

There's already a number of threads about the Live8 performance, so we'll just consider this thread to be on the subject of the new member.

My best guess (since nothing has been officially said), is that he's a new stunt musician.

Crappy performance aside, I was most dissappointed that they have the new guy doing all of the technical guitar work, while Steve (their "awesome in your face" guitarist - the reason they chose him when Mike left) was just doing the simple rhythm section.

Thanks once again Axtech. There are just so many topics I get completely lost when checking the board.

It made me really sad to think that Jamie Edwards once left... the guy with the cool keyboards and guitar effects. I agree with what you said when it comes to Steve playing the simple stuff. Well, I'm not going to turn this this into a "bash the new olp thread", but I really get disappointed with the new stuff, new looks, new sogs and such.

Raine just pretty much stood there the entire performance... not only he sang bad but he had no stage presence. That might be just me thogh.

I was just looking forward to a four-man show, nothing against Joel. I'm sure he's a brilliant musician.

The new guitarist, Joel Shearer, is from the band Pedestrian. He's a fairly in demand session musician, and appears on the Healthy in Paranoid Times album. See: http://www.clumsymonkey.net/phpBB2/view ... highlight=

I'm glad Not Afraid didn't make the album. I think the new songs are better than the final version of Not Afraid, and probably wouldn't tie in with the theme of the album. Vampires, based on the video clip, turned into a really neat song. I think they are going to push for it to be on a compilation album in the future. I thought the Live8 performance was hurt by the absolute crap audio mix that was broadcast. I liked the cover of Bird On A Wire, and felt it was a relevent song for the whole purpose of Live8,

I understand what you mean, but I don't think that the bad audio had anything to do with Raine's performance. And I do believe Not Afraid was better than any other clip from "Health...". If they had an album going towards that direction, that would be neat.

I trully don't know what's up with OLP. They play TONS of new songs since Gravity and a bunch of them don't make the album. Including NOT AFRAID with they performed over at Junos... wtf? That seems completely weird.

I really think Not Afraid would have been a bit out of place with the rest of the new songs, since they sound A LOT more pop-ish than the song. Anyway... :(

I don't think they were satisfied with the final version of Not Afraid. In fact Duncan made the comment that he thought they should have stayed with the Juno version. They recorded 45 songs for the album, so naturally they won't all make the final cut. Walking in Circles was one of the first songs thew wrote for it, and it survived to the album, along with WTSOYF.
As for Raine at Live8, maybe we aren't watching the same performance. During Where Are You, and Innocent, he is out on the runway signing, clutching a Canadian flag in the air. What else do you want the guy to do? They had like 15 minutes to play, so I don't think they had a lot of time for running and doing all the unneccessary crowd hype.

Well, I guess all there is to say is that you believed Not Afraid to be the best of the new songs, but the band obviously didn't. No need to say much more. It's up to the band, and therefore, not up to us.

As for performances, give them a break. They took 2 years off, only performing a few shows here and there. It's going to take them a little while to get their performances back to their best, and learn the new songs front to back.

As far as songs not surviving the album, that's very very common. The one thing OLP likes to do though is play new songs right away for the fans. Often they play these songs live before they've even attempted to record them in the studio. So they might play it live, then get in the studio and realize the song just doesn't "work". If it were another band, we'd have never heard all of these songs that didn't make the album in the first place, live or studio version.

45 tunes? wow! They should realese the ones that didn't make the album in a b-side compilation or something. Maybe they've gotten rusty or something like that, but I guess I've seen Raine done more on stage, anyway.

And of course I know that the band knows better when it comes to choosing tracks for the album, but AS A FAN I'm giving my 2 cents on it. Maybe it's just that I might be having a hard time realizing that OLP will never be same again. I might as well get over it...

have you heard the full versions of Angels Losing Sleep, Will the Future Blame Us, Walking In Circles, Wipe that Smile Off Your Face and Picture? They are simply brilliant.. I have no worries for the new album.

Steve said that there was a song that they cut from the album at the last minute, that he thought should have been on there - we're pretty sure that's Vampires. He said they'll probably look at trying to get that onto a Warchild compilation.

With some 20+ songs cut from this album, it makes me wonder how many were cut from previous albums that have never made it to daylight.

I agree Not Afraid at the Junos was awsome, I was a bit less enthusied about the 2nd veriosn but then again that was more of a studio version and some of the lyrics had changed so it may be more along the lines that it was just different.

What difference does it make whether or not, Not Afraid made the album. You still got to hear it, wouldnt you rather hear a new song you havent heard before?

the new sonds are much better then i expected. This album will be one of their best for sure, after heaing the edgefest clips, will the future blame us and picture are VERY promising. This is the direction OLP shouldve gone in right after spiritual machines.

The album version of Not Afraid sounded like something that could have been found in Gravity.

Listen to the versions from the european shows where they had Mike E too - even better than the Junos! The Junos version just sounds flat to me without the extra guitar part.

The juno version of Not afraid was superior to the studio one, I've gotta agree on that one. Much more energy and better lyrics :)
