My story starts off the way everyone elses has pretty much.
Herd about the concert here on the CM, signed up for the CC (Again) posted there, going for tickets on the edge as well nothign really worked out.
So I thought early in the day $50 for a ticket is fair. No answer. No big deal, not really obsessed about going and by 2:00 I had pretty much given up. No big deal.
Supergirl: "nam, kicker...you two boys wanna be my dates tonight?"
Awsome, figured I'd sned her a line just to be sure. Then another 20 minutes wasted by her playing games. Are you gonna be here by 9:30? .... Give me your cell # we'll talk abotu it ... I don't wanna be waiting outside for your long ... Give me your cell # ... I dunno ... Give me your cell #
So she finally gave me her cell #
I'm going go for it Lori, I'll give you updates as I go along and we'll see what happens.
If I'm not in Cleveland by X time I'll turn around.
So I hop on google and print out the directions.
No time to study the maps now so I just grabbed them told the other guy workign with me to be sure to lock up at the end of the day b/c I gotta go.
Mind you this was a slow day and no one had called me with any problems (Help Desk work) so I could easily leave.
Anyways I grabbed the maps ran for the car and took off. Got home changed quickly, no time to hang up the work clothes jsut leave them on the floor. Stuffed my emergency wad o' cash in my pocket grabbed my pile of OLP CDs and compliations and hit the road.
Another mistake that cost me 20 minutes was going up Sawmill instead of over to Bethal then up 315. All stop and goo traffic. WTF?? It's 3 in the afternoon??
Figured I better fill up now since I'm right by the gas staiton. Swipe the card, no go, swipe again, no go, swipe again locked out. Piss. I go slap a $20 down by the attendnat inside and filled up and let him keep the 50 cent tip.
So I'm off on the nations beautiful interstate system.
Traffic moved well in Columbus, no delays through Mansfeild, traffic moving pretty well and no sign of cops so yea I'll go 80 - 90 mph (Not like the Expiditions and the Navigators of the road we're dogin any less)
No traffic jams heading up to Clevland very good. Give Lori a call tell ehr the good news that things are going well so far.
Well that must had jinxed it b/c minutes later the road split up and I couldn't see the signs in front of the truck I was behind. So I follow the cars lead in front of me and pass the truck.
As soon as that happens theres a cop that pops up in the median facing us.
You get that common jump in your stomach, but immeadatly think I'm safe since I was behidn the other car and he couldn't ahd clocked me with the radar directly.
So I see the cop jump out in my rearview mirror and think the guy in front of me is screwed.
Well, I thunk wrong and the cop pulls me over. Cop said #1 I was speeding, and #2 I was following to close to the car in front of me.
He didn't cite me for speeding but he did cite me for following to close. My thinking is, he screwed up the radar or something when he clocked the guy in front of me so pulled me over as the next best thing. But I guess I can't complain since the cop wasn't the stereo typical asshole or anything. He was professional and to the point. I accepted the ticket didn't try to get out of it or anything. So in the end I couldn't had been pulled over for more than 10 minutes.
Pretty unefentful trip from there. I had just started looking at my directions once traffic cleared up on the other side of Cleveland. Turns out the maps only printed on half the page with the directions in text at the bottom. So I relaly couldn't tell where I was on the map. All I had to go by was the directions.
So I see something like Erie, PA exit 50 is one of the last notes before Canada. Well I didn't understand the directions clearly at the time and didn't realize the extra 150+ after Erie, Pa. It thought Iwas runnign an hour ahead and would make it on time.
So the exits were counting down torwards 50 in PA when I hit the NY Border. I asked the booth guy at the border how far till exit 50. "Hmm .. probably an hour at best"
Crap that put me back behind the 8-ball.
I thought about calling Lori but I didn't want her to give the ticket to anyone else jsut yet and I wanted to push on. Which I did. PA and NY traffic went well I hit 100 at one point following a riced out Probe (By a number fo car lengths not tailgating him)
So yea PA and NY lasted forever untill I finally hit the border. I get asked a bunch of questions by the first guy in the booth. Where are you going, Who are you seeing, when, how long etc etc. "Ok pull up to the immigration building and see someone there.
Not in the plans but being my first trip to Canada I really didn't know what to expect so I went on. The inspector/guard people were around my age and pretty cool. They asked me bascially the same quesitons but were alittle more breif. Jsut had to show proper ID at the next coutner.
Sign on the wall has a heading of "Proper ID" It list:
Drivers Licsense and Social Security card alone are not proof of citizen ship.
Goes on to list things needed like Birth certificate and voter Id card.
A bit nervous at this point but I tell the person up fron I only have my license and SS Card. "No Problem jsut need to ask ou some questions and run your ID"
I say I'm interrogated but I'm not tlaking being locked in a small room and being hit over the head with a phone book interogated. I'm sure they need to be semi-forceful with their questions to catch someone with evil intentions offguard.
Anyways it went somehting like this:
Q: Where are you going?
A: Toronto
Q: Where are you comming from?
A: Columbus, OH
Q: Whats your reason for comming here?
A: Concert
Q: What concert?
A: Our Lady Peace
Q: What time does it start?
A: Around 10
Q: Are you meeting anyone there?
A: Yea a friend
Q: Whats your friends name?
A: Lori
Q: Whats her last name
A: Umm I don't know honestly
Q: How do you know her?
A: Through the internet
As soon as I say that I'm like Oh shit I've jsut labeled myself as an internet predetor
Bit she said everything checked out with my ID and I was set to go.
In the car inspection the guards didn't really check through my stuff much. These were the same people that were my age.
The one girl was like "Nice shirt you have, those guys rock"
Told her I was seeing the concert tonight and she told me it was another hour and a half to Toronto. Some more casual chat and the standard "Your not smuggling drugs are you?" qustions and I was set to go.
Not to be racist but being an average single white guy pays off. There was 2 black couples together and an Indian family that were ahead of me in line that was having everything in their car checked. And extra guards hovering around them.
At this point it was about 9:15. Well doesn't look like I'll be able to make it on time so I call Lori: "Hey I just got through immigration and doesn't look like I'll make it on time. If there's someone there that needs a ticket go ahead and give it to them. I'll try to talk my way in the door when I get there."
So at this point, I'm a bit dejected. But I figure I might was well head up there and see what happens. At the least I may be able to see a sight or two and just take in what Canada has to offer.
So i'm taking it easy and I pull off for gas. No credit card slot so I go in to pre-pay. (Everyone in Columbus is pre-pay so I'm just used to it.) So the guy there again is my age and compliments my shirt. I give him the info and he gives me the qucik instructions on how to use the pump prepay.
Ok so I'm a moron and don't get his instructiosn somehow. He comes out and says "Here I know your in a hurry to get up there" and proceeds to start the pump with his then blatently obvious instructions. (perhaps it was the 7 hours of driving to that point that dulled my comprehension skills)
So I pump $10 worth of gas into my car and it barely makes a dent on the needle. I then see I'm filling up in Liters and not gallons. So I go back in. Can I jsut use my credit card? "Sure no problem go ahead and fill up."
I fill up now go back in and apoligize for being the typicical American tourist. He like, you've actually been my best customer so far. "I get alot of Japaneese people who speak englsih but can't understand it when I talk back to them or people to expect me that since it's Canada I'm supposed to know French as a 2nd language"
So we talk a little more and I head back out to my car.
Just as I get in I get a call from Lori:
"We're heading in, but I left your ticket with will call"
Sweet!
Now you see this is what makes Lori Awsome. Not only does she offer up this ticket to me and take a chance on waiting on somone comming from 450 Miles away. She could had easily sold the ticket to someone else for a good scratch of change. Instead she did what she could to be sure the ticket got to me.
So back on the QEW I go. A word about the QEW. For those in the states unfamiliar with this road it's strectches across Ontario conenction Windsor to Toronto to Montreal. So it's like an interstate you say, whats the big deal? The big deal is that with the majority of our interstates there is contstruction. Or the road is half repaired with the potholes and seems repaired creating steady bumps in the road. The QEW looked to be the smoothest highway I've driven on. Additionally in the states SUVs camping out in the fast lane dominate the road. In Canada while I didn't see any signs posted about this people just seemed to get that the left lane was the fast lane, Middle lane the average lane, and the right lane the truck/bus/slow lane. Additionally there seemed to be a lack of semis, buses, SUVs and even rusted out pieces of crap that didn't belong on the road.
My only compalint is that for as big and important as the QEW is I don't understnad why the signage for it not only on the QEW itself but on side streets nearby are so small. This became a small issue when I accidently pulled of the QEW and figured it'd be easy to get right back on.
Another cool thing was the view heading over the large bridges right before Hamilton and I beleive Toronto as well. I can't say I've ever seen anything like it seeing a big city all lit up like that. Buffalo was a bit similar on the way back but not the same being more industrial and alot of smokestacks and what not.
So I finally make it into Toronto and I find the place. Although with contruction blcoking off the street there wasn't anywhere nearby to park so I spent 30 mins driving around trying to find a parking spot only to park right back where I started jsut before the street was shut off to the construction.
So I walk up to the entrance and tell the guy I shoudl be on the will call list for the concert. He says I'm awfully late (11:30 or so by this point) but I was welcome to go in and see if I can get in. I go up to the next guard tell him I shoudl be on the will call list. "I don't care man, your good with me with that shirt on"
So I walk in to see Our Lady Peace on Stage in Toronto. Sweeeet.
Would had been better if I arrived when they were actually playing and not talking about the issues of the world but I'll take it.
So I herd that last half of Walking in Circles, Naveed, Clumsy, then Starseed. I think after WIC there were people yelling stuff to OLP. I yelled out "I drove fomr Columbus, OH to see you guys. The whole corwd in fornt of me look back at me. Then I herd "I that you Brian?"
and I found Lori upfront by Steve.
My sentiments for the songs were just the same as everyone elses. I don't think they've lost a thing. Awsome stuff indeed to be surrounded by so many hometown and other dedicated fans and just the fact I was in Canada (see previsou statements I've made about the special place in my heart for many thigs Canadian) made it well worth while.
Lori thanks again for the ticket (Although I really didn't need it in the end), Nam, Matt, Nikki and the others good to meet up with all of you. When OLP plays Columbus you are all more than welcome to crash at my apartment.
Like I said this is the greatest length I've gone through to see OLP since waiting 8 hours in the 40 degree Detroit cold to see them for the first time in Detroit @ St. Andrews hall.
Once in awhile you just have to to something crazy and go out on a limb for something wether it's Our Lady Peace or something else simillarly awsome. Just take those thoughts of "It can't be done", or "It's not worth it" and just go.

Damn man. That's a hell of a trip.
Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf
Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...
Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...
So glad you could stay
Forever
He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand
You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..
So glad you could stay
Forever

that was suggested!! but I decided to go with a spot that wasn't as wet and didn't have a drain.
and Nikki likes to pee in the middle of the night, so I didn't want to dream about urine and apple juice that night!
