Stupid Question (sheet music)

Post by Waiting to Exist »

All right, I have sheet music which looks like this, more or less:

Image

I have no clue what this means. Please help. Neither of my parents had any idea what it meant, and I can't find any answers on the interweb. The part that this is supposed to be transcribing, by the way, is The Last Polka, by Ben Folds Five. I dunno if I'm allowed to attach clips of songs, or whatever, but if you have to hear it or something, I have an eight second clip of the section. Help is appreciated.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.

Hmm, could you post the clip for me. I have an idea but don't want to sound like an idiot if it somehow turns out to be wrong. :)

'kay. The clip has more than this sheet music does, but I didn't feel like copying the five or six bars of this that would include the whole eight seconds. It was being crazy slow when I tried to attach it, so I just uploaded it to Rapidshare.

Aren't they slurs?

Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf

Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...

Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...

So glad you could stay
Forever

He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand

You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..

So glad you could stay
Forever

Okay, stupid question #2: what the heck is a slide?

Thank you for answering, everybody (and alexfish).

Oh so I was right. I just called it a slur, as in what my music teacher used to call it, because we played wind instruments.

On a guitar, when you are playing and you don't lift your finger off the string to switch to a new note. It's called a slide, you slide down. Basically you switch notes, without stopping inbetween.

Pick a note, then slide your finger down to another note.

I miss playing an instrument. :(

yes yes that's it. it hurts your fingers on piano if you don't do it right, but it sounds fucking awesome when you do a whole bunch of them in succession.
