Views On OLP
It's really all subjective. Who are you to judge their ability? You aren't in the band, on stage, or on the album, so you really aren't qualified to say if they are the best they could be or not. None of us are. To say what they are doing now is really stupid, is in fact really stupid.
<nam_kablam> I'll be naked holding a ":O" sign while pumping their door

I think that it's fair for someone to say that they don't see Our Lady Peace at the best that they once saw them. I don't think any band has ever reached their full potential, but you have seen many of them at what you would percieve as being their bests, which may be different for different people. There isn't anything stupid about that.

You know what I truly find amazing is everytime OLP release a new CD.. The fans( MB"S) always have an opinion as to why they are releasing what they are and how dare they. It is not as good as XYZ..
This cd is no different.. People were like this with Happiness, SM, Gravity and now this one..
as Matt said we have no idea of knowing if this is the best OLP are or not. We aren't OLP..
What we as fans appreiciate and like is not necessarily what the band may like..
TO who ever said I should stop picking apart post. I don;t like anyone saying how I should or shouldn;t feel about the band cause they do. or the majority do.> If this ends of being OLP's worse record so be it.. Just means it is not my least fave material by them and nothing else. I have never loved all thematerial any of my favorites released..
People are different and react to things differently..
For the record I did not get into OLP cause their so called earlier stuff was complex..

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

Yes OLP has changed, and quite frankly, I'm glad. It makes all of their albums unique and exciting, but i think Bob Rock has had a lot to do with these latest albums. Gravity, the way i have thought of it, was to put OLP BIG in the STATES and everywhere else. And you have to admit, it has been their largest publicized album here in the States. Bob Rock did a great job there. I think the new sound on HIPT, is a little less Bob and a little more OLP, maybe thats why some people think that it sounds more "OLP'ish" I personally am not a big fan of Bob Rock. But I think that HIPT is a promising album I am really looking forward to it. And we should all enjoy it for the simple fact that its a NEW OLP ALBUM!!!!

I for one don't think "Where Are You" will be that big in the US. If "getting big" is the strategy, I still think it was a terrible single choice. I don't think they'll get farther "somewhere out there" than the single of the same monniker took them, to be quite frank. They need something poppier, and I say that with a straight face, because I for one think OLP has always been poppy, not just "since Mike left".
And Bob is definitely the major reason for the change, but the band has to be accepting of the change as well. Raine admitted during the Gravity sessions that his writing was directly changed by Bob. The producers in OLP's history have both been absolutely integral to their sound.
And as a sidenote, I don't think Mike's influence (or the lack thereof) was how Gravity resulted. Don'y get me wrong, I absolutely adored Mike the guy and still adore Mike the guitarist, but Mike doesn't have that much musical power that his leaving turned SM -> Gravity. Case in point? Listen to Fair Ground. Nothing to really write home about, and the songs on Gravity are arguably better.
And my anticipation for HIPT is rather uneasy. On one hand, "Where Are You?" is bleh. On the other, every other clip I've heard is on a similar level or much better, but none worse really, so I have that to keep my spirits up.
But if I don't like it, I won't shrug it off and suck it up because it's OLP.

Having heard the song on the radio, I dislike it less than I did before.
I also heard Innocent on the radio, and I found that after a long LONG abstinence from hearing the song (aside from Live 8), I dislike it less than I did before.
However, I still don't consider either song "good". They're not horrible, but far from good.

About the Mike stuff... Fair Ground is basically a side project, where Mike is playing guitar for someone else, who wrote all of the songs. In his own words, Mike has said that it's just something he sort of fell into doing.
I definately agree with you in regards to the importance of the producer. I think a significant factor in the change was the lack of Arnold Lanni, who, it seems, had a much bigger part in OLP's writing process that many would have thought. From what the band has said, and what they've produced, it seems that Lanni was one to challenge the band to go deeper and more complex, while guiding the process. Rock, on the other hand, is guiding the band to a simpler, more stripped down sound. Remember Raine saying that he was finding it hard making things simpler for Bob? I think they were doing this as an intentional departure from Lanni's former production style. The band wanted to get away from doing that, and challenge themselves in a different way.
The unfortunate thing is that a number of fans (dare I say the majority of their long-time fans) abhor the sort of music they came out with when they released Gravity.

Nicely put. I also have felt more that OLP wanted a drastic change more than they wanted sales, wonderfully disguised as the latter under the veil that was Gravity. However, I have a feeling OLP is done with Bob for some reason, especially after reading Jer's very candid comments on the HIPT sessions.
If HIPT is a solid CD and I want more from OLP, I'd be interested to see what they would do if it was self-produced.
Then again, I also have a gut feeling the reason that they aren't self-produced is that they need a "big brother" (Bob, Arn) to stop the band from killing each other, and even then, as per Jer's comments, there still were almost casualities.

Bands need a producer..for that input..and extra voice in the studio. Bands that produce their own stuff usually end up putting out lesser quality stuff. I'm not really anti Bob Rock..I think he's a good producer for this point in OLP's career. I actually thought Gravity was a solid album, but I definately didnt want the new album to sound like Gravity part 2..and it doesn't. It's almost a complete 180 from what I've heard so far. A lot more atomsphere and guitar work, and they've been crafting this record for 2 and a half years(or more) unlike the 10 weeks of Gravity..."Where Are You" sounds like OLP's "Vertigo".

Maybe, but if we take what Jer said to mean the band is done with Bob, then we can very easily take it to mean they're done with Raine, too :p
Unless you're referring to something I'm not aware of. I'm talking about the quote about throwing Bob and Raine off a cliff.
