Bob Rock

I think OLP took Bob Rock in thinking he'd think like the fans he told (or asked) them to change the sound. And put it out that they are a rock band. And now i think the Band has changed themselves forever or a while anyway. the only one who could probly change them is Lanni. He's the man!

I'm gonna have to say i don't like Bob Rock very much... He really made OLP mainstream. I read how he told Raine to simplify his lyrics to make them seem more relatable to the audience... isnt that just dumbing it down for the masses? I mean Happiness... was an amazing album, why? because the lyrics were so well written, it allowed different interpretations, which is what made OLP relatable to their fans. I really have a feeling he had something to say to Raine along the lines of "you can be big in the USA, you just need to make things more radio friendly". And i really wouldn't doubt if part of that involved getting rid of Mike, He always wanted to try something new with his music, and really allow OLP to explore, with him out of the way, Raine is now able to take a lot more control of what happens, which i feel is what has led to "Gravity"...
I think Bob is about money, the more "great" albums he puts his name on the better his name becomes...

just my opinion...

I Agree^ but then again if Theif was on the radio on the USA (or in my part anyway) it would have been HUGE! I hadn't heard the song theif until after i bought the album!

When it all comes down to it, OLP chose Rock as their producer knowing what he would do. Raine chose to follow Rock's advice and change his lyrical style. Mike chose to leave the band. OLP chose to make this record sound like this record. Bob rock did what a producer is supposed to do and offer creative suggestions and craft thier sound. He did not force them to do anything. I hate to say this, but if you don't like the album, you only have OLP to blame. It was their choice. They love the album. They love the direction they are going in. If you don't, don't search for someone else to put the blame on. I for one love the new album. I think that the new lyrics are less complex, but still have a ton of room for interpretation. For those that don't like the new album yet, keep listening. I bet you will grow to love it!

well yes i love the new album as well, its fantastic, but it just seems to be too influenced by Rock...
as for the supposed far-fetched speculations... yes they are speculations, far-fetched? i beg to differ, it makes very much sense what most of us are saying. Rock's influence is loud and clear on this album and i can only hope that OLP do something more OLP-ish on their next album...

Doesn't it kind of fatigue you to worry about Bob Rock and OLP's new album? I get to a point where I don't really want to think about it, I just want to enjoy the album for what it's worth. I don't care what goes on behind the scenes, at least some of the time.

I dunno, I just got back from a meet and greet type thing and Raine was a bit of an asshole, so it's difficult to reconcile that and him being the creator of something that touches me emotionally or spiritually or whatever. So I'd rather not care.

I somehow think Matthew Good is the good kind of asshole. He's not really an asshole, but he claims he is, and people believe him.

He just doesn't like OLP very much.

Endymion, what you said actually made me think a little. Remember once Matt Good said something like "OLP is a put-together band by Arnold Lanni..."? Now doesn't the departure of the sound from Gravity satisfy his statement? All the complexity, all the trademark sound of OLP is not by Raine, but it's by Mike and Lanni.

Maybe all songwriters are like this, they all hide a sort of arrogance and cynism inside, that's what make them so good. Lyrics are their only form of dialogue and they choose to build up a wall to conceal their emotions, only leaking them out in their lyrics. Same with Matt Good, Raine and Brandon. Don't know too much about Thom.

That's what I've been saying all along. Bob Rock told Raine that if he didn't write the songs in this way then there would have been some kind of catastrophic cosmic alignment (like in Tomb Raider: The Movie) and Dr Evil would have taken over the world. And Raine believed him. What a sucker!

After listening to Gravity a second time through, I don't really like their new mainstream sound. I sometimes forget it's OLP I'm listening to and think I'm just listening to some band like Creed (oh dear god.. maybe not that bad) with a lead singer that just happens to sound like Raine. I probably have to just get used to it though. Among the songs I do like: All For You (I had already heard that one), Do You Like It(brings back memories of the concert :wink: ), Sell My Soul, and Sorry.

I noticed the same thing. It's my favorite, too.

All my friends love Made of Steel best, for some reason. I could hear American Hi-Fi playing it.. it's a good song, but it's just not OLP good.

is it just me or does Made of Steel really remind you of a Weezer song? With the whole guitar part opening in the begining and throughout the song really makes me expect Rivers to start singing, lol, I'm surprised everytime when its Raine.

I dunno, for me Our Lady Peace will always be Clumsy-era. They're frozen in my memory like that and I truly loved them.
