G8 Summit and Live 8 concert

Post by Tattooed Angels »

I am sure by now you have heard of the concert that Bob Geldolf is putting together for the G8 summit.. All I can say is who ever goes to the London show is one lucky bastard. Sting, Paul McCartney, U2, coldplay, Velvet Revolver just to name a few of the Big acts. And it is for free.damn I wish I could fly over...

on a serious note. this years summit will be to discuss if the USA and other rich nations should drop the debts of developing countries and thrid world countries of the money owed and make trade fair.. Also by giving adid to these countries they can use the moeny to help fight off world wide poverty and AIDS..

I am curious to know what your views are on this. Should the USA drop the debt and give money/aid to these nations or should we hold them accountable for monies owed to us..

here is one article form the ONE org.. site..

G8 Summit
Jul 06 2005

WHAT IS THE G8 AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

The G8, or the ‘Group of Eight’ Summit is an annual gathering of leaders from the world’s eight wealthiest and most powerful countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States). This summer, these leaders will gather in Scotland to decide the fate of an entire generation living on less than ONE dollar a day. On July 6th - 8th, President Bush and other G8 leaders will discuss the major social, political and economic conditions that leave nearly ONE billion people living in extreme poverty – nearly half of whom live in Sub-Saharan Africa. With your support and voice, President Bush and other world leaders will know just how important these issues are, and together as ONE, we can Make Poverty History this July.

In America, more than 3 quarters of a million people have come together under ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History to lend their voices to the fight against global AIDS and poverty. Aided by Hollywood celebrities like Jamie Foxx, Brad Pitt and Kate Hudson; artists like Bono, Jewel and Michael W. Smith; and faith leaders like Pat Robertson and the Reverend Frank Griswold, our voices are being amplified.

When the G8 leaders met in 1998, 70,000 people formed a human chain, encircling Birmingham, UK where the leaders met, calling on the G8 to drop the debt of the world’s poorest countries. These advocates put debt relief on government agendas and led to pledges of debt cancellation. When we stand together as ONE, we can make the difference. If you’ve never been part of a big campaign event before, 2005 is the year to do it! And if you have – this is the year to get your friends, family and colleagues involved.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR:

MORE AND BETTER AID
CANCEL THE DEBT
TRADE JUSTICE
By taking three simple actions at their meeting on July 6th, President Bush and other G8 leaders can lead a generation out of poverty and put an end to the AIDS pandemic. President Bush must go to Gleneagles, Scotland ready to join with the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United Kingdom in delivering a historic deal to make poverty history.

As ONE, we call on President Bush to:

Build on existing US commitments to the poorest people of the world with more and better assistance at a cost equal to just ONE percent more of the US budget on a clear timetable
Cancel 100% of the debts owed by the poorest countries
Reform trade rules so that poor countries can earn sustainable

They should drop it. Its money they're obviously never going to see, but with making them have looming debt over their heads, the third world countries will nveer have economic growth, or the money to put into their own health care systems, and education.

I agree with you. I never understood why you would try to get money from a country that is poor. Instead of helping them to grow on their own and be able to care for their own.. It is sad. If you watch all these news stories from One and even Warchild.. It is scary how people are dying of curable disease. They don,t have the resources to get the meds needed..

We live in such a rich natioon that their really shouldn't be any poverty here or anywhere for that matter.

I know this a bit of a different topic my one of my co-workers and I were discussing yesterday how much food there really is in the USA> Nobody should be hungry.. We have teh resources, there has to be a way to cut through all the red tape to help these nations..

Instead of spending money on a war to build anation that may or maynot succed when some of that money could be used to help otehr nations suffering in extrem poverty or have children dying of curable diseases when all they needed was a simple shot we tin the USA take for granted.. i am not really mad. I am just sad that there isn;t more I can do to help excpet try to get people involved or contact my politicans

http://www.unicef.ca/news/displayNewsItem.php?id=119 <-- that is very interesting.

According to this Unicef thing,

Canada's Child Poverty Rate is 14.9%.
USA is 21.9%.
UK is 15.4%.

They're all sad.

The worst OECD country in the world for Child poverty is Mexico with 27.7%.

 I couldn't agree more.

In a related note... who's going? We're (me, Melissa, and Monkey) totally going to the Philly one. It's nice to be able to go see free music and on top of that have it be for such a good cause.

I just hope these concerts accomplish something. I'm afraid they might not because world leaders will just see the turnout as people who just wanna see free music and not people supporting the cause... which, honestly, the majority of people there will only be there for the free music.

The reason why these countries remain poor is because it benefits us substantially. We're able to exploit resources and workers for the sake of our economy. If every country was a developed one ("first world") then the cost of manufacturing goods would raise immensely.

Not saying that it's right to exploit people. This is just the reasons why it happens and why the G8 don't care.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Very sick but very true.

Pumping more money into the countries isnt going to help. We need to teach them how to fish, not just give them fish.

I am not. It is a serious thing they are discussing there.( at G8). ALot of Americans take for granted things that you wouldn't reallky give two thoughts about.. In other countries they have to struggle for it.. So for me I do take it serious..

We are extremely lucky living where we do.

because he really listens to the people.

I agree, it is a serious topic, but comic relief is sometimes needed, I don't know about you but thinking about how people starve to death every second of everyday isnt something I like to think about continuously. Its sick. Isn't it something like, 3% of the USA's military budget[aka bloodsport fund] would cure world hunger?

Very sad.

There was an American senior politician/bush adviser type man on tv last night saying that the reason that the US couldn't give much money to Africa was because they were spending all their money on protecting the rest of the world from terrorists. And the reason that Europe can give lots of money is because we're being stupid and not spending any money on crazy wars and making the US do all our defence for us.

I wanted to smash my tv with a sledgehammer in an attempt to shut him up. Surely people don't believe such blatant lies?
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.

And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.
