In my book, greatest hits only consist of the singles.

in my mind you need to have more than like 20 singles to release a greatest hits... cuz they are GREATEST of the HITS. then you pick out of those.

but that hardly ever happens

cases in point: britney spears, shania twain, lenny kravitz, leann rimes, mariah carey, and more of the sort have greatest hit cds.

so do the eagles. queen. the doors.

now. which of these bands truly have enough hits to have a 'greatest hits' cd?
uhhuh.
see...it's one thing to have a singles compilation, like no doubt did. even something like olp's live works well. it gets all the singles in one easy listening package for casual fans. just don't call it a greatest hits, unless you've had 891892357 hits to pick from, and have been around long enough to show you have lasting power.

that said, an olp greatest hits would make me die a wee bit inside. when they've been able to stay prolific as long as, say, the guess who, go hard. but it would just be jumping the gun to do it anytime soon.
