Which is why our government shouldn't have any connection to religion at all. That way both sides can be happy. Conservatives are clearly strongly effected by Christian thought. Hell Stockwell was a retired Minister.

And i'm sorry but gay men getting married isn't a relgious issue. Not only Christians have marrige in their culture therefore, just because the english word for a universal concept has a strong affiliation with the Christian church doesn't mean Christians own the right to marrige.
It would be a religious issue if the government forced churches to marry gay couples.

Whether you like it or not pretty much every country in the world will be linked to religion in some fashion. Everyday at school you sang "God keep our land, glorious and free" and also if you want to be technical the Queen of Canada is the supreme governor of the Anglican Church. I also don't know if you've read the Charter, but the first line states, "Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law".
Also, not all conservatives are christians. That's a huge misconception. There are many type of conservatives ranging from fiscal conservatives all the way to religious conservatives and everything in between. The fact that some of you lump all conservatives into one basket is somewhat hypocritical.

Well I mean it is an issue. A canadian election will be called soon, and basically it is a battle between the Conservative party and the Liberal Party (I don't know how much you know about Canadian politics Cass so I'm just making sure you know that we have a party called "the conservative party" and that we're not just talking about conservative people in the american understanding. By no means am I belittle-ing you, so hopefully it doesn't come across that way)

I don't know much about it, actually. But I did gleen that much information out of the conversation. Isn't that basically what happens in America? Liberal vs Conservative?
ya pretty much. Our Conservative party is probably the same as the Democrats except for the church aspect. Like our Conservative party still has public health care initiatives, so I mean they're right wing in some aspects but if they were an American party they'd be along the same lines as the Democrats.
Here though its more complex than just liberal vs conservative... it's more like...
Liberals vs Conservatives vs Liberal socialists vs liberal seperatists.
oh and then there's the green party, but ya much like your green party, they suck here too.

lol ya but what we consider right wing is practically your left wing with some people who are christian.

and I'm an idiot because I put the left and right wings on the wrong sides, but I'm too lazy to change it... oh and the democrats should be underneath the Conservatives... it won't work properly for some reason.

It's also a scary thought that liberals are so prominent in your country, to me Sinead. I don't think you are respecing the other party's beliefs whatsoever.
to be honest, i don't care if the conservatives get voted into office. sure, they wouldn't be my first choice, but it'd be nice to see what they can bring to our economy. i'm too upset with the liberal party to vote them again in the upcoming election.
I agree, that economically the conservatives are intelligent, and for the sake of our economy they'd be a hell of alot better than the NDP.

Why is it a scary thought? It isnt like Canada is the most powerful country on earth and is trying to force beliefs on other countries at the price of war. *cough*
I never said I disrespected their opinions, I said I disagreed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, its a bonus of living in a democratic country. But as they are entitled to their opinions which happen to clash with equal rights and also that of taking lives, I am allowed to express my opinions as well.

Here is what I think is wrong with this.
Politicians are supposed to represent the people are they not? Not just the elite, or the poor or the atheist but all people. I find the thought that religion (or at least religious ideas) must be kept out of politics rather ridiculous. Whether you want to accept it or not, Canada has millions of religious people. Who is going to be there voice? These are people who find no difference between their religious life and everyday life. The two are the same. If you were to tell me to put aside my "religious ideas" in the name of politics I wouldn’t be able to do it. I live my religion out day to day. You could argue that Canada is multicultural and has many religions, or lack there of, therefore religion can’t be in politics because it doesn’t represent "everybody." Well politicians who are against abortion sure don’t represent me. In fact many of the ideas of our politicians don’t represent me, but I still view them as valid. So why is it that the opinions of religious people are seen as completely invalid in today’s world. Are we as a society going to ignore the millions of people who have religious opinions? That’s not accepting at all. Our government preaches acceptance and equality and yet they are trying to stamp out every trace of religion found in politics today (among other places) "It has no place they say." Well what about my voice.
There isnt necessarily a problem with religious voices in politics. However, when they're trying to impose laws on all the citizens that are strictly religiously based, around whichever religion they are, lies problems. Everyone isnt one thing as i'm sure you know, and lots of people, arent anything at all. To ensure that no ones rights are infringed upon, its almost impossible to pass religious based legislation, just as its very difficult for a religious minded group to be elected to power. [Because of Canadas Diversity]
The criticism[And there are more than one, I'm just stating my strongest argument] that it recieves its based around the fact that according to many religions, my own included, homosexuality is evil, and gay marriage is a matter that shouldnt be thought of. I know this to be untrue, and obviously it IS untrue. However many religious people believe it, and its their right to. But What happens when they elect someone who wants to enforce a law against homosexuality, because and ONLY because of their religion. That, is why people don't want religion and politics mixed.
I will however, agree that the religious culture our country has is very much overlooked, and looked down upon in many instances, because ofcourse if someone believes in God, and practices their faith they must be a "raving rightwing neo nazi".
No one is trying to pass a law against homosexuality. The conservative’s sure are not. They are trying to keep a law or set of ethics that has always been in place. People seem to forget that. Saying that those who are against gay marriage, are somehow against equality is a bit of an overstatement. They simply are for something that has been in place since the dawn of marriage. When you frame it under equality, it evokes the image that those for the traditional marriage are somehow hateful, backwards people. I know plenty of people who haven’t a scant of hate in them who are for traditional marriage. Conversely I know many religious people who are for gay marriage who also do not hate.
Thank you very much for seeing my arguement though.
