What is this shit?

And how would this in anyway benefit CANADA. As it is Canada always gets the shit end of the stick when it comes to our relations. If we joined we would become a minority with no real say in politics, but vastly differing ideologies. Why would we trade in our progressive society so we could join a less advanced one and have no say in it? We would in effect, be in teh same situation as the Canadian west is but much worse.

So seriously some one explain how this wouldn't just be Canadians being forced into American rule?

Well for one, you'd have distributed rule rather than be controlled by Ottawa.

Like I said in the other thread I think the geographical, and philosophical (in politics) differences are too much at the moment to overcome.

ummm no... it'll go the other way. Canada will become less liberal. We'd probably ensure our charter still had an effect (thus keeping abortion rights, and gay rights, etc..), but I would imagine things like universal health care would not exist, we would at least be open to a two tiered system.

People are already beginning to advocate a two-tiered system (I'd be for it), so we're gradually inching closer to a less socialist nation.

I don't think you understand... I don't know why i bother but here we go...

Canada is already becoming a less socialist nation. In ten years I will doubt that the Canadian health act will be in existance unless it has an amendment allow citizens the right to whatever health care they want, whether it be provided by state or private entities. The fact is that our health care system is deteriorating because of the monopoly the government has had on it. Basically they're offering us crap, and we're forced to take it because it's against the law not to.

In the states at least you can shop around for your health care.

That can be blamed on poor money management.

I agree though that, that is a set back of the American system, but we don't necessarily need that system. A two-tiered system would at least give people choice. If they feel they would be better off with the services provided by the government then they can pay taxes towards their health care. Otherwise they can choose to use that money to pay for private service.

Money is spent either way. If anything, a private system is better because if you don't use it you don't lose the cash. Whereas with the government system, you might not go to the doctors or the hospital for ten years and still fork over thousands of dollars.

The problem I see with this is that the people who can afford private service (ie the ones with all the money) will opt for that, and the poor will be left supporting each other.

Under the US government, each individual state could determine how health care is handled in its district. So, lets pretend Canada annexed with the US, the Canadian "States" could keep their social health care platform while the current states could maintain the privatized version. Also, there was a comment made that Canada would become less liberal. Why is that? It is pretty clear that the Northeast and Western coast in the US are fairly liberal. This race was very close electorially. Had Canadian provinces been states and electoral votes casted, I'm pretty confident Kerry would be president right now. Look, Unifying Canada and US does not mean the US "takes over" Canada. Don't let your dissatisfaction with US policy cloud the concept. Put aside the "we don't want to be like you!" mindset for a second and think about it. I think there is one legitimate complaint about the unification and that is that the over-consuming states could wreak havoc on Canada's resources. Nothing says legislation couldn't be made to prevent such a scenario, however.

Personally, I think it's a lot more likely that at some point in the future, America breaks up into seperate countries. The northeast and west coast think so differently from the south and midwest, there's no way we're gonna continue to stay united forever.

Well I disagree with that. Even though Kerry the NorthWest and West coast electoral votes, most of them were still decided by less than 10 percent of the popular vote. Likewise for the South for Bush.

It's not all about what president we elect. Go to the other parts of the country... it's like visiting a different world.

each country is already massive with large regional differences within them. I would suspect, as Nikki just mentionned that this would cause division within nations before it makes them larger (ex. soviet Union)

I just don't see why it would be better to have one large country comprised of both canada and the US. From a Canadian perspective, our economy is dependent on the US. Integrating the two won't help at all. It's common knowledge that when the canadian dollar gets higher (as it is right now) it often causes our economy to falter due to lack of investment from the US. If the two countries formed one country with one currency, it would not be much different than the amerian dollar being at par with the canadian dollar, and businesses would just migrate south.

Because our relatively low population Canada would have little say in any American politics.

I really don't think it is. If were gonna unite Canada and America, why don't we just put Mexico in there too. Hell while were at it, we can throw South America in. Then we can all be united. Then All of Europe can be united. Then eventually we can unite the whole world. I'm not saying it's gonna happen soon, but it will eventually.

Queens Of The Stone Age-Someone's In The Wolf

Once you're lost in twillights's blue
You don't find your way, the way finds you...

Tempt the fates, beware the smile
It hides all the teeth, my dear,
What's behind them...

So glad you could stay
Forever

He steps between the trees, a crooked man
There's blood on the blade
Don't take his hand

You warm by the firelight, in twilight's blue
Shadows creep & dance the walls
He's creeping too..

So glad you could stay
Forever
