I agree with you mostly, but the thing is, a lot of people choose to portray themselves with an image. For instance, someone who purposely dresses like 50 Cent or another similar rapper, are intentionally portraying an image that's linked to being sexist, violent, money obsessed etc. So that person is choosing to portray themselves in that way. And unless you know a person well, don't you judge them on their choices?
Then again, I could be biased because pretty much everyone I've ever met who dressed like and angry violent rapper, was an angry violent person who listens to rap.

What I'm basically trying to say is that you shouldn't really judge a person at all without getting to know them. But if your first impression is based on image, then you're not necessarily a bad person.

i don't judge people on their clothing choices no .. just because someone chooese to dress a different way then what's considered 'normal' by societies definition doesn't mean i'm going to assume i know anything about them.

Spending time with a person, having a conversation with a person ..

I know what it's like to be judged based only on looks and it makes a person feel like ass so I'm not about to do the same thing. Having a lip ring taught me a lot about society and how people can be assholes, I don't want to be like that.

okay i have something to say. im not even sure what we are arguing about anymore cuz this whole thread is so garbled...

i think what sean (i am me) is saying is that he looks down upon good charlotte because they act so punk when they actually are not. in my opinion their music is not even punk, its just poppy rock. and they are calling themselves punk.

personally i don;t care if they put on eyeliner or wear black nail polish. hell, i wear eyeliner and black nail polish. i could care less about their image. but what does annoy me is the fact that they see themselves as so dark and experienced with All The Pains of Life. and i can tell you, NO ONE at the age of 20-something, has gone thru it all.

i love how people claim to know what other people have gone through in their lives.
like anybody has a clue what people they don't know and have never met have been through .. just because a person hasn't been through it ALL, doesn't mean they haven't been through ENOUGH.

That's not really what I meant. I meant like, if a person chooses to dress like a some public icon, than its not to much of an assumption to think that they might look up to and respect that person. I don't think you should judge them on that, but if it's partly contributes to your overall first impression, then I don't think thats a problem.
It is possible that I think that because I'm surrounded by Eminem, Chingy and snoop dogg wannabes five days a week.

And people judge Good Charlotte by the way they dress because they're purposely trying to portray a 'punk' image while singing pop music. Or at least, it's probably on purpose. We don't know them, so we'd have no way of telling.

actually Joey i believe it's the other way around, i too hate people that think they're better then others. And many of those people think that they're some how more unique then the rest of us,andthat we're sad followers, when really that's exactly what they are. And back to the video, i didn't mean GC ripped them off with intent. the director of the video probably stole a few ideas.

oh and by super cololrs i meant the candy landesque bright colors in both videos, contrasted by an angsty dark band, and sinister citizens

oh, ok. I've never seen the soundgarden video this thread started as being about, but after seeing the video for the second time, I can really see the Tim Burton influences. The lady with her hair in rollers looks almost exactly like the one in Edward Scissorhands.

anyway, here is an article on their cd from alternative press .. i like magazines that are actually honest and can see the good and the bad instead of just bashing and i thought this article was well written:

"Biggie had life after death; maiden had live after death; hell, now the used have in love and death. So it's really not all that odd (or original) that pop-punk's reigning champs Good Charlotte decided to outdo 2002's multi-platiunum The Young and the Hopeless by going the mortality route on their third full length, The Chronicles of Life and Death. And to those of you who couldn't care less about how the Madden twins want to die - what you'd rather hear 15 songs about how hard it is to be famous?

Chronicles is a blatant - and often valiant - effort by a young band who have already experienced extraordinary success and now want to be taken just as seriously as musicians. The problem is that while these two things aren't mutually exclusive (just ask radiohead), it's not as easy as picking up a Muse album or adding a gratuitous string section to your song (see the album's first single Predictable). However, we should give credit to the band for not merely following the formula that made them stars. Here's how it all breaks down:

Things that are inexcusable about Chronicles: The fucking Japenese choir that opens the disc; ripping off Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" both musically and thematically on "S.O.S'; every second of the Justin Timberlake, rock-your-body pop song "I Just Wanna Live" (most egregiously inserting the main riff from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into Joel's falsetto fueled chorus); having not one but two ballads ("The Truth" and "We Believe"); and, worst of all, making fans buy two versions of the disc if they want both bonus tracks (and in case you don't feel like shelling out 40 bucks, Life's "Falling Away" is the one to own).

That said, there are plenty of excellent thigns about Chronicles that will raise the morale of the GC Army and convert enemy troops, as well. They are as follows: "Walk Away (Maybe)," the heaviest - and catchiest - song the band have ever written (which coincidentally, is one of the few songs where GC actually sound like themselves); "Ghost of You," which tactfully addresses the loss of a loved one without sounding sappy or overly sentimental; the Cure-copping "The World is Black," which looks like a disaster on paper but is a delight on the ears; Billy's effects-driven ornamentation on "Mountain"; and successfully keeping a cohesive theme running from the opening title track to the climactic closer, "In This World (Murder)."

In the end, this isn't rocket science, it's rock music, and it shouldn't be overanalyzed. Good Charlotte have obviously put a lot of effort and imagination into Chronicles, and if it comes off as slightly awkward in parts, well isn't that part of growing up? Chronicles may divide GC's audience, but it also hints at something remarkable the band are just beginning to tap into - and if their fans have the patience to stick it out, Good Charlotte's next disc could be on par with the legendary artists that they attempt to emulate here."

I have no opinion on their latest album since I still haven't heard anything but Predicable off of it but I do plan on buying it eventually.

i... disagree with some of this article, and agree with some of it.
there's nothing wrong with the ballads, "the truth" is a friggin great song. i'm in love with it.
i agree that Walk Away is a super-amazing song. it's really well written and i like it.

and i also agree that "i just wanna live" blows chunks. he was wearing pants WAYYY too tight that day.
you have to, you just have to trust me

i said i don't single out and hate people who dress diffrent. I single people that annoy me when it's obvious they're dressing up like they're favorite pop-punk band, in a sad attempt at proving they're individuality to themselves when really they're no better then the "Preppies' they loathe. It's one thing to be unique and dress how ever you want, it's another to follow pop-punk fashion, and then try to come off better then other people

as i said before look at the bands i listen to.

Janes Addiction dress up as weird homosexuals half the time.

Hawksley Workman is apainfully white guy that wears farmer/rapper clothes.

The Dandy Warho;'s don't wear clothes.

Brian Byrne wore pigtails.

Dave Navarro is Goth.

i don't hold anything against any of them, i knew a guy at school that i defended every week to my friends because he wore really bad looking 70's clothes, bottle glasses and a gelled comb over. He also happened to be a tottally cool guy, who just didn't give a fuck. I never get cred from music elitist such as myself ( i know i am), because i'm no where near indie enough. But frankly i don't care, and i don't like to be judged by them either.

Point is, i don't discriminate based on looks

and half those girls are still either sad, or just as bitchy and elitist as any popular chick or music guru.

hell you presume that they and GC have gone through really tough shit in their lives, and that's why they wear those clothes. So has hundreds of other people. Being yourself means being yourself, you shoudln't have to prove anything about yourself with clothes. So i find them just sad when they look down on me assuming i'm some sort of rap lovin suburban white boy, when i'm probably a hell of a lot more individual then they ever were. I don't need to show it off to everyone.
