A Perfect Circle - eMOTIVe Review
A Perfect Circle - eMOTIVe Review
I'll start off by saying I'm quite a fan of APC, and I eagerly awaited this release for sometime.
Then the Imagine cover was released and I listened and was mortified by what they did to it. However that aside, I thought maybe that was just an anomally. Then Passive came into my possession and I was happy again, since Passive was an EXCELLENT track. Then was Gimmie X3 and my trepidation returned. I wasn't really sure what to make of it. And then I heard the God awful remix of Pet and my dread was flooding in.
I procured the whole album today. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING THIS GOD AWFUL ALBUM. It is TRULY horrendous.
Passive is the ONLY track on there worth listening to. And maybe Freedom of Choice. The rest is SHIT.
Annihilation is whispering to the sound of triangles. WHAT THE HELL?
A Fiddle and a Drum sounds like Maynard belongs in the local male choir.
When the Levee Breaks sounds almost indie-ish or chill session. Something you expect John Mayer to come up with.
What's going on I got Enya overtones from.
People are People is Blind Melon-esque
Peace Love and Understanding sounds like a Tea Party rendition with violins. Thats a NO on all fronts (I like the TP, I'm going ot see their show in a month)
lets Have a War. Dear God. I thought I'd put D12 on by mistake.
That Pet remix and Gimmie X3 sound like Rammstein in slow mo.
Passive is a great track, APC like we're used to. Freedom of Choice... the jury is out.
This review is a little jumbled. But you get the idea.... DONT FUCKING BUY IT.

I'm on the APC mailing list, so I'm buying this limited edition t-shirt with it too.
Anyway, I'm going to have to totally disagree with Korzic on this one. I downloaded the album today and I absolutely love it. It's different, unique and fucked up in the most artistic way possible. It's a truly great album. There are some songs that just seem like they CAN'T grow on you because they are so different.
Now for my explanation. Any hugely obsessive APC fan has already heard their live version of VACANT and even though not the best quality live bootleg, it's an AMAZING song.
Well, that song is on this album and it's named PASSIVE this time around. It's my favourite song on the album, it's still has some sort of mysterious raw energy even after it's been laid down and is no longer live.
The first track annihilation is a song maynard whispers the whole time. It has a cool feel like it belongs in Kill Bill or a movie for a black and white scene.
The last track Fiddle and the drum is completely a cappella and really shows off a lot of the maynard vocal cliches everyone's familiar with.
Peace love and understanding, is unbelievably catchy and listenable the first time around, it's one of the unique songs where at first listen I couldn't tell if it was even maynard singing. I'm fairly sure it is now, but if it is he sure sounds different!!
When the levee breaks isn't one of my favourites. It's alright, but yeah it's really slow, and nothing will top the Led Zeppelin version.
What's going on reminds me a lot of a DAVID BOWIE song. Now I don't listen to david bowie a lot, but it's just starts out with that vibe. It's cool, but it still has to grow on me a little more.
Imagine, most of you have heard and I still think it's kick ass. Period.
Gimme gimme gimme is really weird. It has more of a deftones feel to it I'd say, but not really, it's one of those that isn't at listenable, as least not yet. There's no vocals here, just kind of yelling, but I can't remember what the term for the type of singing it really is.
People are people is something I can't put a finger on. It sounds like something they recorded off balance or underwater. It's got an unusual artistic style, I like it because of how weird it is. Another song with a different vocal style at some parts. It almost doesn't sound like maynard.
Freedom of choice is once again different vocally. It's like a maynard we've never heard! It's got some cool guitar, simple, but it fits. I think this one should have been done louder, with maybe some yelling when they say FREEDOM OF CHOICE! It would give it a cool edge, but nonetheless it's "far out man!"
Let's have a war starts out really cool, but I'm not a fan of the way the vocals are done. It's going to have to grow on me, but I dig the style of this album so it's awesome in it's own way. I especially like the lyric "give guns to the queers." Good times, good times.
Counting bodies like sheep is fun to listen to and think about at the same time, nothing will top the original PET, since this is pretty much a remake. It's a song that feels like it's telling a story, it progresses slowly, similar to a long tool song, only it seems like it's specifically made to have visual accompaniment, like a music video or some weird short film. I'm not a big fan of the music video for this song, it's cool, but it's something I could easily do on my computer. I think it deserves something really mind bending.
Well that's all of the songs. I'm really glad I pre-ordered this album. I wasn't sure when I read Korzic's review, so I had to Download the album, but now I can't wait for the DVD on the same day as the album release!

I bought it, so now I can arguably... uh, argue the points made in the first post:
"When the Levee Breaks sounds almost indie-ish or chill session. Something you expect John Mayer to come up with."
Wrong. It's like... spaced out neo-jazz or something.
What's going on I got Enya overtones from.
No.
People are People is Blind Melon-esque
Uh... Blind Melon could never, ever have covered a Depeche Mode song. It sounds like a Depeche Mode song. Go figure!
Peace Love and Understanding sounds like a Tea Party rendition with violins. Thats a NO on all fronts (I like the TP, I'm going ot see their show in a month)
I've never heard Tea Party, but I thought this was one of the very un-APC tunes on the album that worked. I like that Billy sings lead on it (just as he does on People Are People and Freedom of Choice)
lets Have a War. Dear God. I thought I'd put D12 on by mistake.
Anyone that can compare APC to rap must be on drugs. You're mishearing things, child.
I think "Passive" is one of the weakest songs on the album, actually. People just know that it was a Tapeworm song, so they're going to automatically think it's great. It's not. It's good, but... whatever. "Freedom of Choice" is an excellent cover though, so I guess you were pretty right there. "Imagine" is the weakest song on here with the remix of "Pet," and I'd say "People Are People" and "Freedom of Choice" are my favorites.
