It's true that the song doesn't make much sense, but it doesn't change the fact that Alanis' Jagged Little Pill album was a fantastic album, and a lot of those songs became massive hits and have been influential for many new artists.

And also that she changed the line from "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife" to "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful HUSBAND".

In terms of cultural impact... I'd say Bohemian Rhapsody or Imagine, or one of the Beatles' songs (too many... :p ).

In terms of WTE impact.... Annie Waits by Ben Folds, or Jane by Ben Folds Five.

And about the lyrics. They aren't violent as much as poetic. Yes, Jeff Mangum's friend did shoot himself in the head, as you can tell by the lyrics. But if you read the entire song, you'd sense the emotions that Jeff is trying to express about missing his friend. And what his friend's father was going through at that point. Jeff had a way of writing some of the most haunting lyrics that just left you dumbfounded in how they seem so disturbing at first glance, but turn into something beautiful if you give it the chance.

The song is rather simplistic too. There's just Jeff's straining voice, an acoustic guitar, and a little bit of the saw in it. The way he hits the notes in this song, coupled with the way Jeff just stums the same rhythm, the subject matter, and the way the lyrics come off in your mind, it just hits you. And it hits hard.

Such a simple song is capable of making you cry. Hell, it does that to me, and no songs can pull that off for me. If I'm not crying, it's making feel these inexplicable chills throughout my body. It's just the perfect song to mourn the loss of a friend, and the perfect song to end a career.

for me there is no song that´s the best song ever... i always tried ti find my favourite song for all the times or something like that... but now i really think that that´s rubbish.. there´re like a million beautiful song out there... and if you´re trying to "limit" them and find the best of them that´s just stupid (sorry)... you´d have to take into your consideration all these things like your age (because your taste often changes with your age), and so on.. and that´s just not possible due to one can´t know all the songs out there... well.. you all know what i´m trying to say i guess.. ?! so thatá my opinion... :nod:

I heard somewhere that Bohemian Rhapsody is the most recognized song ever, so I suppose I should add my nomination to it.

You missed the best bit of that routine! The part where he tells the story about the woman in an audience who was haggling him, saying about the knife/spoon thing "it's a metaphor" in a really snotty voice, and he came back with "ah, but she says it's LIKE ten thousand spoons... which makes it a simile." hee! :lol:

The whole point of this thread was to point out the best song ever and I gave guidelines to follow. It isn't your personal favourite, it's music's best/most popular song. Alex was right with Bohemian Rhapsody being the most recognized song in the world, and that kind of post was what I was looking for. Not a bunch of crap about how there's just so much music out there making it so that music cannot have a "best song." It contributed nothing to the thread, and had you of read the guidelines you would have noticed that before you wasted your time with that post.

so what by miles davis . . . I guess that's what happens when all you study at school is jazz. But really, miles davis has had such a profound effect on music in so many ways, and really to narrow it down to one song of his isn't really fair, but I guess so what is probably his best know one. So there ya go.
