I hate Canada
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.
And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.

Why is the World Cup a joke? Well ok here's a list of things that are wrong with the tournament.
1. No qualifying. Therefore it's an invitational tournament and not a World Cup. World Cups (as per football, rugbby, cricket, etc) contain qualifying rounds in which any country in the world has the chance to compete. As much as I agree that it would be a waste since there are about 6 or 7 powerhouses, I propose that those 6-7 teams get automatic berths in the tournament. After that Any country that would like to participate must qualify for a spot. This means the tournament would expand to 16 teams, making it a true World Cup.
2. The tournament is incredibly bias towards North American teams. The fact that Canada and the USA were allowed to play all of their games on home soil shows this. A true World Cup is held in one country, and is held on a rotating basis. This would decrease the bias, and give every team the same advantages and disadvantages.
3. The round robin was just exhibition games. They held no purpose for the tournament except explain who would get to play Germany in the first round. That was the only advantage that could come from that. By Adding more teams and only allowing the top two from each group, it makes the tournament more meaningful. Imagine France played Canada to a tie, forcing them to get 2 points out of their next game to advance? It would make for much better hockey.
4. To make this legit they need to make it every 4 years. This really did just feel like a big money grab for the NHL/NHLPA before the lockout comes around. It wasn't an accident that the final game of the tournament was conveniently held the day before the lockout.
The problem with the World Cup is that there was more done wrong than right. It was poorly structured and needs to be fixed because frankly on an international scale very few people knew this was actually going on.

I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

The "world" cup is and always will be the Canada Cup series with a more friendly name
in that sense
you're ripping the canada cup and not the world cup
they changed the name to make it more marketable
and yes a lot of this is for marketing purposes
its not sanctioned by the IIHF (or atleast not put together by them).. that would be the "World Championships" and they do have more legitimacy to them
the world cup basically is created to foster some national pride here and to try and sell the game to the folks south of the border in order to bolster the fortunes of the owners.
nothing more

and another thing
you dont think the guys who were playing werent proud to be wearing the jersey?
representing their country?
of course they cared
if THEY care then the actual level of hockey will STILL be good
i missed the czech - canada game but from what ive heard that was an amazing game
(more so for the czech's)
and i dont care if its a cash grab or what but that goal by tuomo ruutu was damn fuckin good

Oh I agree that it was a proud moment for the players but I still stand by my comment that the tournament was a structural joke.
