Filmmaker Jehane Noujaim examines the coverage of the war in Iraq by journalists at Al Jazeera.

We wanted to show that every war has a human cost," an Al Jazeera executive contends. U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld counters that the network not only is favouring Saddam Hussein's regime but is rounding up women and children to present as bogus victims.

Rumsfeld's characterization of Al Jazeera is not supported by Noujaim's footage, which portrays a somewhat green news network staffed by people who'd like to create their own CNN, even as their perspective invariably is going to differ from that of U.S. journalists. The staffers' views of the United States and Saddam certainly are more nuanced than Rumsfeld would suggest.

i used to get the news on those channels when i lived in the middle east, and i never got the impression that they were any more biased than the broadcasts from the cnn and bbc. (although they were mostly in arabic, so i can't be sure.)

actually, no one i knew would watch cnn because it was a "gossip channel." and that came from a bunch of 8th graders during the 1998 air strikes on iraq (which was supposed to be visible on clear days from the mountains near the town we lived in.) mind you, it was also during clinton's whole impeachment thing.

^ I used to be a CNN addict. One day I stopped watching it and felt smarter.

I want to see the film, but it's not showing in my area until October.
