Management ≠ Label.

kermit__35 wrote: sony has treated olp fantastically, getting their albums lots of media hype, giving fantastic video budgets and not to mention that they offered them a record contract after they only played 12 shows!

You also have to remember that they signed them at a time when it was fine to take risks on artists because labels had money to spare. Bands don't get the luxury OLP got in the 90's.

sorry my head was somewhere else )with the managment/label confusion) i still stand by what i said.

If OLP is planning to leave Sony after their 7th release then that could be an explanation as to why they are taking so long to release this album. They could possibly be using Sony's money/resources to record up a bunch of songs, release the 7th ablum under Sony, then use all of the other demos, etc. to release another ablum shortly. Maybe on an independent label or something, or possibly even under Raine's label. If that's the case it would be smart of them to record as many songs as possible while Sony is fitting the bill.

There is no way OLP is going to an indie record label. A band that got signed to a major record label after recording about 0 songs doesn't seem like the kind of band that would jump from guaranteed money to a label that can't give them studio time or money.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I think they'd be able to do it and still make out pretty well, at least in Canada.

You need the initial investment of studio time and all of the other costs associated with recording, but let's face it- it isn't like the band members are dirt poor.

They could get a distribution deal easily. Any distribution company in Canada would love to make money off of them.

Advertising is the only thing I can think of that would be a problem. It takes a lot of money to let everyone know you've got an album coming out. They could use their fame for quite a bit of publicity though. Radio stations are going to add their singles just because it's Our Lady Peace.

It'd be slightly more difficult in the states, but they've got a name for themselves here too.

It would be nearly impossible to go independent overseas though. They'd have to sign with a label, or at the very least sign with an incredible distribution company and tour a lot over there. I'm sure the fans there won't mind :D

Even if their contract is expired, they may just want to renegotiate.

If you haven't noticed, the entire OLP section of the CM is based on speculation. For 2 years all we've done is speculate... it isn't something new.

in a slightly diffrent topic, this is why Raine needs to sign IME. IME are currently without label, they have history and it woudl give Raine freedom to leave Sony and work on his own label. Jag Tanna owns a top of the line recording studio called mothers hip and also knows a lot about production. This would give Raine and his signed bands a studio to work in for a cheaper price.

And, possibly, a good influence on OLP's writing.

he does, it just costs money for a producer...but he can produce it himself, in fact if what you guys think is true...he will probably produce the band's album(s) after they leave sony...

Or they'll break up, and Raine'll work with his wife, as he has mentionned he would like to do.
