first of all, there are no guarantees that he's going to be killed. this trial is not so much about saddam but about the hearts and minds of iraqis. this is their first look at the new government and the new system and the americans and new iraqi government want to make sure they get the desired reaction.
they've got to let the process run it's course and hope that the facts will support their case. if they rig the trial or ignore saddams rights in order to get a hurried conviction, the iraqi population is going to take note and ask themselves how the new government is any different from the old.

You're right because Bush Jr. does anything his daddy says. But when this whole Iraq thing is over and done, there will be some other reason to go the Middle East, whether it be suspicions of weapons of mass destruction or maybe just us stupid North Americans meddeling in Middle Eastern affairs like we always do.

I agree that he handled himself well in court, but I think the USA will play too large of an indirect role in this. I mean honestly what would the US do if he was somehow found innocent, or only given a small sentence?

that's easy, he'll be killed by a fellow prisoner, or he'll "commit suicide"
you'll be suprised just how many jail doors open in prison. one door that hold a serial killer and another door opens for a cop killer that only got life in prison.
