Guitar help

Post by Rusty »

hey everybody, here's my little thread for those who play guitar and would like to share their knowledge of what they've learned with others who are just starting out (namely me) or those who already play and are seeking to get better. So anyway here's my little problem i got what you said about tab before i think...the E on the bottom of tab is the thickest string?
E<--------thinnest string?
B
G
D
A
E<---------thickest string?

then the numbers beside indicate frets like
E--2--
B----1---
I understand that too, and its read from left to right but is it also read from top to bottom? or bottom to top? i went to look up some tabs for songs on the net and couldn't understand them, does anyone know a very simple tab i could play? or have any way of explaining further?? thank you

Don't take his hand

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

Take my answer with a grain of salt, because I only just started trying to consider playing at all a couple months ago.

Tabs, I think, are read left to right, which you apparently know. If two numbers are lined up, you play them at the same time. For example:

-4--------------------
-6--------------------
----------------------
----------------------
----------------------
----------------------

You would play the two lowest (position wise) notes at the same time, with your fingers on the fourth and sixth fret. If you had:

-4--------------------
-6------------------8--
--------------9--------
----------------------
----------------------
----7------------------

then you would play the in the order it appears. 4th and 6th at the same time, then 7, then 9, then 8 (of course, each on their respective string).

But again, I know little to nothing about guitars, so I am probably just making a fool of myself with this.

EDIT: and yes, the string on the bottom of tabs is the thickest, and the one on the top is the thinnest.
I just wanna get out,
Stuck inside of this.
Waiting for something else,
:wte:

The tab strings are set up as if you're looking down at your guitar.

E<--------thinnest string
B
G
D
A
E<---------thickest string

is right.

The numbers (which fret to put your finger on) are read from left to right. You don't really read it "up or down". You just go from left to right, hitting each note as you go along.

So...

E--2-----------0----
B-------3------3----
G----------4---3----
D----5---------3----
A---------------0----
E--------------------

In that, you'd play the second fret on the first string, then the fifth fret on the D string, then the third fret on the B string, then the fourth fret on the G string. Then, you'd strum an A chord (since they're all lined up from top to bottom, you play them at the same time).

Holy shit, that was the worst display of typing prowess I've ever seen.

Chords suck to play at first. But after time, they become easier and easier to play. Then you hit a wall and you can't fucking solo, like me.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

yes *hangs head in shame*

As for the stretching, it'll come with time and practice. You might to to try and play with your fretting hand. Spread your fingers apart by using your picking hand. If you know what I mean.

And as for soloing that once again comes with time and practice.

here's a question for you, how are you supposed to play frets that are right beside each other? for example:

E------5------------3------
A------5------------3-------
D------5-------------3-----
G-----------------------------------
B----------------------------
E-----------------------

Remember, play from left to right. Play the three strings on the fifth fret first, then play the three strings on the third fret.

You could either do this:

I=index
M=middle
R=ring

E------R--------
A------M--------
D------I-------
G---------------
B---------------
E---------------

Or, you could barre one finger across all three...

E------M-------- (technically, you can use any finger...)
A------M--------
D------M-------
G---------------
B---------------
E---------------

Just so you know... the second choice... can be pretty frickin' painful!!!!!

Course, I have tiny little fingers that aren't very strong... so perhaps that's my problem. :*)**
