Justice, vengeance, right, wrong, good, evil, security, democracy, liberty. How long a list? Much longer than this I would think. All of them words, all of them used to justify violence against others, all of them robbed from language and made the banners of thieves.
What noble nation guarantees its national security by extracting vengeance? What sorts of people support those who claim it just to take hostage human beings and then sever their heads? What sorts of people support a government that lies to them and then murders over 10,000 civilians defending a now corrupted understanding of freedom?
One could sit here until they’re blue in the face and offer educated reasons as to why we find ourselves in a world where nations spend more on perfecting the ability to kill than they do on perfecting anything else. But I’m afraid none of those educated reasons will do.
If we’re to learn anything from our deceitful nature, from our impeccable ability to lie to ourselves so convincingly that we no longer possess the ability to recognize truth let it be that despite the words used to justify our abhorrent actions there is one greater that binds all of us no matter our belief. A word that transcends politics, religions, justice, and the pitted vipers of our bloodlust. A word that escapes the lips of fathers and mothers of supposed terrorists just as it does the wives and children of American soldiers.
In the end, after all is said and done, it is the only word that matters more to us than any other. To champion it above all other words is both risky and dangerous in a time when we are made to feel weak for believing it all-powerful and capable of being a realistic mechanism for change. But even those who would discount it cling to it in private, secretly wishing it would find them and lift them up.
Without it in abundance we flounder in despair and imbrue those noble possibilities of our species that ultimately must claim us whole.
