The Bad Plus

Post by hpdfk »

Troy is right to love them. These guys are incredible. Check these guys out if you interested in learning jazz but you can't find anything exciting enough. They're a piano-bass-drums trio that manages to cover nirvana and black sabbath.

Not just piano, JAZZ piano
their Iron man is better, but they do some interesting stuff with smells like teen spirit.

I've heard of people doing this but never actually heard it. During a solo, the pianist reaches into the piano and strikes the piano strings with his fingers. It's a cool effect.

Yeah, they cover some really different stuff! My personal favorite cover of theirs is the Police song "Every Breath You Take". I was crazy enough to buy the $40+ (US) Japanese import of their latest album "Give" and that song is on it. I believe you can also get that song from iTunes (or a similar service).

hpdfk, with your comment about Ethan reaching into the piano, it sounds like you've seen them live...is this so? I've had the pleasure of seeing them twice. Ethan did that the first time, but not the second (the second time, TBP was opening for Medeski, Martin & Wood and had limited time...TBP was *far* better BTW). I'll be seeing TBP again on July 31st for TWO shows!

Although totally different artists in just about every respect, TBP is the only band I've ever seen who puts on a better show than OLP (IMO, of course).

Hey hpdfk (or anyone else who's interested) would you like a copy (cd-r) of their out-of-print live CD, "Authorized Bootleg"? I also have a list of "Unauthorized bootlegs" if you will. The list is at http://www.geocities.com/thebadplus3. I would be willing to do a B&P (blanks and postage - e-mail me for more info) or you can e-mail me your trade list (only non-mp3-sourced please) if you have one.

no I have not seen them live. However I've been to enough jazz shows to know that each set each night is very different. Any covers or rarities they do that I don't know about?

Give is a good CD
Notable Tracks:
1979 semi-finalist (manages to convey emotions very well)
Frog and Toad (a mellow song. Something about the bass that I love)
Velouria (Pixie Cover, nothing like and way better than the original)
Layin' A Strip on the higher-self state line (a fun song you could dance to if it was 1940)
Dirty Blonde (Reminds me of some In Utero, especially the song Dumb)
Neptune (Paints a portrait of being desolate and alone)
Iron Man(Just plain rocking)

A lot of people don't know about their first album which is self-titled (I'm not sure if this is the case with you or not), and this includes "Knowing Me Knowing You" by Abba and "Blue Moon" by Rogers & Hart as well as some covers and originals from "...Vistas" (different versions) and a couple exclusive originals. You can get this CD from amazon (or probably tons of other places) but they have mistakenly called the album "Motel".

As far as other covers, they've played "I Will Survive" by Donna Summer, "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young (I even heard that the three of them once ended this one by singing the chorus). They've also done some classical covers of Bach and Strauss pieces, but I've never found out which ones they've done.

They also have enough unreleased material (some new, some a little older) for at least two albums....check out the setlist archive at my TBP site for some of the titles.

Oh, and hpdfk, you have an e-mail!

I did hear about the first CD. Heard it was bad though. BTW, if I ever mail out a CD for B&P, don't expect it for a long time. I'll be gone all summer.

The first CD is great as well, just not produced quite as well as "...Vistas" and "Give". For example, all three instruments are panned center (basically the same thing on the right as the left).

Don't worry about when/if you send, I get those packages all the time and as long as you include your address on the return envelope and you tell me what bootleg(s) you want, there's no problem!
