A question for the religious and non-religious alike.

Serious discussion area.

Jimmy, when I question the "meaning of" things, I'm not talking about a definition. I'm asking the bigger questions here - the reason for these things, the greater purpose.

I'll explain my point about heaven further.

As I said before, Heaven is being in the presence of a Holy God.

We are not Holy. I mean, look at the world around you. We fuck up. There's eons of evidence for that. Earth is not a very Holy place.

But, Jesus was Holy. He lived the perfect life because we couldn't. The only way for a Holy God to relate to an unholy people was for Him to become a human and experience it.

The question here is "Why is there a heaven?", as in what greater purpose does heaven serve? Why is there a heaven at all? Why is there any existence at all, on any level? Why is there a God? Why is there a heaven? Why is there a physical world? Why is anything? What caused all of this? The end can not just be God, because there has to have been something before God, or else there would be no reason for his existence.

Dude, go get laid and quit asking so many questions. People could ponder themselves into insanity on this stuff. It's not meant for us to understand. Eternity and the origins of life and souls and God and Heaven are beyond human comprehension. The secret of life is: There ain't no secret, and you don't get your money back.

This is all in good fun. I limit my ponderings to this thread and the occasional conversation. I live my life day by day, it's not like this is all I think about.

Yes, but for some people, the greater purpose pretty much ties in with the why. You can't seperate them.

I understand where he's coming from there, but the question that I was asking is about the reason for there being any existence at all, not just the reason for heaven in relation to this life.

Has anyone ever answered that question? I mean why? Why do we live? Why is there a God? Why do I get up in the morning at all? I don't know...maybe it's just the fact to see if we can.

If biologically, the reason for other animals is to reproduce then why can't that be the reason for our existance?

Truth doesn't have to feel good. That's why it's truth.

True. But I'd rather try to be optimistic about and possibly fool myself than half such a despressing outlook on life. It's hard enough to be happy w/o that.

Well, whatever you believe is whatever you believe. I personally can't force myself to believe something just because it'd make me happier. I'm not willing or able to delude myself that way. Not to say that's what you're doing, just that, for me, how I feel about things doesn't factor into whether I believe them or not. I don't necessarily like to believe that there isn't a god, but that's reality as I see it.

Well I wouldn't say there is no proof. But it's sort of something you've got to open up to. I don't know...but if I never felt or saw or read things that made me believe it I'd be just as demanding of some proof. But I won't go into that.

:) I'm not asking you to justify your faith, and, most of the time, I really admire those with strong faith. I don't believe that science is a "religion", as some people claim, but I do understand that there are ways of looking at the world that are completely alien compared to mine. It's not my place to say "I view reality this way, and in the scientific frame, there's plenty of proof that I'm right, so neener!", because there are people whose worldviews aren't even on the same plane as mine.

People are never going to agree about these things. All we can hope for is tolerance.

Rob made a typo at the outset of this thread and no one's mentioned it yet. :uh:
