A OLP Thread for DOUG, ALAN, CHRIS, AND SEAN, STAY OUT!
So anyways, OLP were fucking genius. Do you guys still hold out hope that the new stuff is going to be better? I'm hoping so, Wipe was pretty promising.

Actually instead of posting here I think I'm going to read through this thread: http://www.clumsymonkey.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8397&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 because it already has a lot of posts on the same topic. Then, if I have something to add I'll post it in there.

I don't have much hope for OLP anymore. I just don't.
You know I thought Gravity was a terrible album with maybe two noteworthy tracks, and that was a gut punch. Then I saw them 5 times on that tour, and they played the same 19 songs each and every date, except for the Detroit show, when they played In Repair and Automatic Flowers. The tours, in general, were a kick to the bean bag.
In other words, that last album has done more damage than good. From the beginning, each one of their albums progressed in sound and sounded better and was easier to get into, but still made you think more. Then Gravity came out and set Canadian music back five years. Gravity is an album that's supposed to come out when a band is searching for its sound, and it supposed to be a complete throwaway in later years.
The best I think OLP can do is maybe another Naveed, has a couple great songs on there, but is still generally impossible to listen to from start to finish. I don't see another Happiness... or Spiritual Machines coming out by this cast of characters. Ever.
So yeah, discuss.

I find it very easy to listen to from start to finish - often on repeat.
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.
And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself

i'm not quite as cynical about their future but pretty close. I also loved Naveed though. Simple is better in some cases, more commercial is not.

i'm not sure about the new material. wipe didn't really blow me away.
my biggest beef is with their live show, which is now uninspiried and redundant. as was previously mentioned, i don't think they've changed their set list (other then a few minor amendments) since like 2002. they do the same tunes with the same solos and the same "birdman dance" at every. single. show.
when we were at Stage 13 watching them play, they played all their songs in a hurry because there was a storm coming and they wanted to get off stage. no encore. and Raine Maida, rockstar that he is, forgot which part of Alberta he was in and kept calling the audience "EDMONTON" and insulting calgary.
IRONIC ISN'T IT RAINE that half the fucking crowd was from Calgary.
You know what i say to that? BOOOOO.
The next night, God And His Band (3EB) put on their show. They had flown in from LA that morning. It rained a little during the set but Stephan Jenkins didn't care. He cracked jokes, he flirted with the audience, he complimented Canadians for being tough. They played LOTS of their material, not just the singles. They played an encore.
By the way, INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN ROCKSTAR STEPHEN JENKINS knew it was CAMROSE he was performing in.
OLP used to be the best live band in the world. wow, funny how LOSING MIKE TURNER changes things.
