(Taking Sean's Idea) List Your Top 15 Solo Artists

Post by Neil »

When I think of bands (like Sean's original thread) I don't really think of solo artists..........so post your top 15 solo artists here. I know that many solo artists have bands that play behind them, but you of course don't even hear about them. Hell......I never knew Beyonce had a freakin band.

Mine are: (in no particular order)

Eminem
Bob Segar
Sting
Darius Rucker
Brian McKnight
2Pac
Jay-Z
Eric Clapton
LL Cool J
Robbie Williams
Seal
Toby Keith
Dave Matthews
Paul McCartney
Bono (Perhaps not solo....but the man is amazing by himself)

When it comes to ranking solo artists, mostly I can think of is some female pop artists that I don't even like much, and it's so hard to find a rock solo artist out there. So I can't make up a list of 15 solo I actually like...But allow me to be cheezy, of all the pop solo stars, I like Robbie Williams, Christina Aguilera and Madonna, and Kylie Minogue a bit. And of all the so-called rock, alternative or whatever edgier than pure pop solo artists, I'd like to say Alanis Morissette, Sam Roberts, David Usher, Sarah McLachlan and John Mayer a little bit...There might be a few more but I can't think of for now.
Shame on you if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice...

Matthew Good
Ben Folds
Jewel
Brendan Benson
John Lennon
Adam Green

don't look now, just keep watching the TV hating what's too see waiting for someone to say something that's right.

Just because I am sexy, naked, a bassist, and sporting a top hat doesn't make me Duncan Coutts!

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.

John Lennon
George Harrison
Paul McCartney
Eric Clapton
Jeff Buckley (does he count?)
Jimi Hendrix (he shouldn't count, it really was a band)
Eva Cassidy
Janis Joplin
Miles Davis
Bert Jansch
Muddy Waters
Joni Mitchell
Skip James
Robert Johnson
Stevie Ray Vaughan

But I don't know if a lot of those count, because they had backing bands and such.
This is my story both humble and true,
Take it to pieces and mend it with glue.

Matt Good, Matt Nathanson, Billy Corgan, and Ben Kweller are all that come to mind off the top of my head.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.
