I've been watching the Woodstock '99 show and well, its been making me feel kinda sad. Sad because I've never been able to see Mike play when he was still with OLP.
I never did get to see him either, bro. First show I caught was when Steve-o had just joined.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.
I saw him one time - with his lovely big headphones on on the Happiness ... tour I didn't get to meet him though
Open your eyes to nights and days, you close them up and float away
and somehow inbetween you've got to master lying to yourself
you back the cause, get out of school, you get a job, the job gets you
and somehow every day you end up serving somebody else
now if that ain't panic that you're feeling, then you damn well better start
you can drive it into that head of yours with the hammer in your heart.
And it's alriiiiiiiight now, take the world and make it yours again.
i saw them during the SM tour and he just kind of rocked out and didnt draw too more attention. It wasnt as much of a "drama" as their live shows now. It was just a rock concert and that was what was good about it. Sure Raine still fell on the floor during Birdman/Carnival but it wasnt as excessive it was just right. I hope they ditch this whole matching outfits every night thing they have going on for the next tour b/c that is something that annoys me. Steve does provide a bit more youth to the show b/c he kind of shows off when he plays guitar while Mike took it in stride.
I saw Mike with OLP at Music Without Borders. He was fantastic. He even walked around the stage and smiled at everyone who was seated behind it while everyone else just played to the front.
i've seen Mike play several times. i met him at a food court at one of the shows once, oh man, he was getting lunch but he stoped for over 10 minutes to talk to my friend and i. i've meet another member of olp at a random place like that, ummm... let's just say i didn't get the same response
i've never wanted to write about it on the board cause it's kinda something you wouldn't expect from him. i probably shouldn't have said anything. sorry.
I have seen Mike on and off stage. On stage he really wasn't that different then most guitar players out there. He had good nights and bad nights. Some songs were awesome to watch, some not. I never really broke it down to just one member. Somehow when OLP play live it all comes together and they somehow compliment one another live.( even today I feel this way) I must admit though that Mike was very much into the fans.
Offstage he seemed distant(well to me anyway-it depended on his mood), other times talkative. He was always talking with the fans. You learned alot from Mike. Very Intelligent person, knowledgeable about alot of things. I feel he was a bit serious, but he also could laugh.
I will say that when you did get to talk to him beyond hello it was well worth it.
I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again Teach the young people how to think, not what to think-Sidney Sugarman

i saw mike play a few shows .. i was never impressed with him .. i found him boring and would always try to get in front of raine or duncan instead .. i'm sure he's a great guy and all, but boring on stage
