A question for Americans

Post by I AM ME »

I took American History in Gr. 10, and i still remember a lot of it, but its gotten pretty fuzzy. Could someone explain when the Democrats, and Republican's switched roles? Because i remember the Republicans were originally the northern liberal ones, and the democrats were the conservitive racists, could someone explain why they switched names?

Yes, I believe it was July 26, 1923 when the Proclamation of Referencial Switch was signed. On this date, the Republicans and Democrats made a deal to switch names and from that period forward be known as the opposite party.

It happened, but it is not something that you can attribute an exact date to. It just happened over time.

They're just indignant that someone doesn't know everything about American history. Everyone has to know about American history, whether they're American or not.

And, instead of bitching me out, prove me wrong for once. Instead of giving him bullshit, help him out and explain something to him.

I think some of your answers may be here:

http://gi.grolier.com/presidents/ea/side/rparty.html

but they never just "switched names"

and the ideology behind both parties was never "conservative racists". Yes the Republicans tend to be more conservative and the Democrats tend to be more liberal. That hasn't changed.

I don't think anyone is bashing him for saying he should know everything, I think that some of us may just feel that that really isn't that important.

I do remember that happening from when I took AP. All I remember is that it was in the early 1900's sometime. I think that it is just kind of the cycle of parties. Definitions and ideals change.

Actually, given what typically goes on in this forum with relation to political parties, I honestly suspected he was making some statement about how much the two parties resemble each other lately.

It's been a rather gradual thing, yes, there is no real date you can ascribe to it. In large part, it's because the two parties are trying to reach out to the most voters they can, so they start "wavering" on some issues, leaning more one way than usual, and when that gets results, they keep leaning. Eventually they meet in the middle.

thanx that's all i wanted

and what's up with the dates? lol i never asked date from anyone and they keep telling me how it doesn't have a certain date, or joking about it. As for my racist conservitive comment..it was exagerating a bit but..........they were conservitive, and they were extremely racist.....meh it wasn't that off

not that the republicans were angels, i realize they were not a ton better, and there was other less talked about motives then slavery

During the civil war it was the democrats who were segregationists. AKA- Why Lincoln was a republican and a good guy......it was a different republican.

Its really confusing...but basically......the Southern Democrats split off from the "Democratic" party. They were more focused on States rights, rather than federal control. These Southern Democrats became today's republicans, and over time the old "republicans" fought for women's rights, social reform, city planning.............and became the democrats.

Originally, the Democratic Coalition were the Republicans of today. FDR was more focused on social security, welfare, ect. The roosevelts turned away from southern problems......created farm alliances, ect. Then Eisenhower took over..........and the democrats controlled the house. When Johnson won the presidency, he beat Barry Goldwater. Goldwater believed that state and federal should be seperate. The south also believed this. When Johnson won.....it was basically the final switch over of the south being primarily new republican.

It was a pretty hazy ambiguous switchover.............it just slowly evolved over time, but the main point was when the Southern Democrats split off, because they are essentially the Republicans of today. And when Johnson won the presidency............

Hey! I haven't heard much from you since Steph and I met you at the Columbus show back in July 02. Where have you been?
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I am out in Los Angeles now at UCLA. Basically just doing school stuff........waiting for OLP to tour so I can build up this pathetic west coast fan base :D

Saw them a few times after that show.........in much cooler venues. Haha....that summer was some of the hottest concerts I have ever been to.

Still jealous of all the middle america love OLP had on this last tour.....I felt pretty neglected :P What have you guys been up to?

After the civil war, the south was called the "solid south" because every southern state would vote democrat as a form of revenge on Lincoln. Even well after the parties switched ideals.
:freak:
This was all pretty convenient until Reagan, when they started using their brains to vote for the party that best reflected them: the republican party. Now the south is pretty much solidly republican.
