What does a mixer on a CD actually do?

their main task is the get all the instruments in balance with each other. and don't worry about stupid questions, you can't learn if you don't ask.

I kind of assumed they were like a editor for a movie, and they took all the clips ever recorded for the song and put them where and when they were needed.

I was thinking the same thing. Like he would put the chorus somewhere, then add a verse, then take half of the bridge and mix it with some chocolate syrup.
