so...
so...
Mike: I don't know. I hope so obviously. But, I think more than "hopes for" there are "fears of". It would be a great fear of mine that we would do this because it's a good paycheck. I hope we only ever do this because we think there's an opportunity to make good music, and to do something musically, creatively, and artistically. If I ever get the sense that it's not that, then I'll leave. That would just be my integrity in the role of the band that is what my hopes are. With that in mind, if we all maintain our integrity, I don't see why we wouldn't be a long-term band.
well i don't mean to start another gravity thread but...
after hearing that and seeing Mike had left what did i expect of Gravity? Man i should have seen it coming

no offense but you keep starting topics to start controversy...before with the OLP Live and Chart magazine. Lets try and leave it alone for now..Gravity is 18 months past us. I just dont want another argument on here then more people leave..more and more people leaving gives me less and less reason to pay for this board to keep running.

kudos on the pre-emptive fight stopping.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

The only people who really know why Mike left is Mike and the band. I guess management may know also. Nobody was really talking beyond "we are going in different directions"
Everyone has been speculating why Mike left, etc. We will never know. All we can do is wish OLP(Duncan, Jeremy, Raine and Steve) the best and Mike Turner the best. It shouldn't be an on going thing which Rob was pointing out and lots of us have said over the years.
BTW I remember reading that quote from the band about paying $15.00 for acd etc. Also when you look at past interviews you have to remember that is what they felt at that time. They may not feel the same now
that is all.

i was just checking out emtee.org again and felt like posting it, as i stated before i wasn't trying to bash Gravity, i was just saying that you could see the signs ahead of time that he was going to leave.
As for my other threads, OLP live? That thread was directed at Sony, sorry if we have some die hard Sony fans here
. And Chart? What did i say there that was wrong even?
If people are leaving for dumb reasons like that then i don't know what to say, perhaps they should seek psychiatric help for dealing with confrontation

The really weird thing for me is in March 01' I had aconversation with a friend at the time. I said I felt it would only be a matter of time before Mike leaves. Not because you could see he wasn't into OLP anymore, but I just felt this vibe. When I read he did leave later in ther year. I wasn't really surprised, but I was bit shock. i didn't think it would be so soon. I just felt that he was growing tired of the whole scene. I can't explain, it was weird fo rme cause I got this vibe from talking with Mike. It seemd he was a bit tired of the whole palying in a band thing.

I reckon it really must have been hard for both Mike and the band by the end. I'm sure they didn't dislike each other, but they are just different personality types. It was probably almost always like this for them. The last straw was when they started to grow apart musically. I mean, I watch Mike during the Music Without Borders show and he, even while playing, does not seem to be himself. He was kinda just there. He had to have known then that he was about to leave unless something changed for him or the band, and maybe he had held out last hopes that he'd catch the vibe of Gravity.
I can see Raine, Duncan, Jeremy, and maybe even Jamie watching movies or playing video games while Mike sits in a corner paying attention to a book. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you can see what I mean I think.
I can't really see the band fighting with Mike for long, or vice versa, with voices raised and the such.

I would like to think that since a few years have past they can start to talk again. It is sad, because weren't they friends also? That is what I found sadest of all. I remember asking Duncan in 02', if they spoke to Mike at all? He told me that he didn't know what a divorce was like, but figured this was close to one. Where it will take awhile before you can talk again. WHo knows? I hope within time they can be friends or at least talk to one another again.

how was i starting a fight? No one even touched my post asking it, i was just bringing it up because mike is on all of our minds now since his new stuff was announced. Gail understood that i was just commenting on a past interview, i even stated that i didn't wantto get into gravity.

I saw two of Mike's last shows with OLP, one at Edgefest (103.3 WEDG, Buffalo) and Music without Borders.
One thing I noticed at the Buffalo gig was Mike doing less and less of his leads, and more of the guitar work had been shifted to Jamie. It was pretty apparent that OLP were looking to Jamie to do Mike's parts.
To bolster that theory, I recall that in some of the initial promo photos (on the web) for Gravity, we saw Jamie in the photos! Doesn't anyone remember or have these?
Then we would hear later that Jamie was gone too and the photos disappeared. OLP were very much hoping to displace Mike with Jamie and the reasons could have been very understandable from both sides.
If you ask me, I'm betting that Mike wanted more of his songs on record, didn't want to play the Bob Rock "Rawk Guitar" sound and really just got older. It was getting to the point where Mike was the old man in the videos, and I'm sure the folks at Sony were more than happy to bring in "Yummy Steve" for the females to look at. Certainly more appealing than Mr. Turner (all due respect) who was going on 40.
Honestly, does anyone think it would be an easy sell to give the pre-pubs Mike Turner singing "We are...We are...all Innocent" ?
No. Mike does not belong in the realm of TRL, MOD etc. He doesn't fit in, Steve does and is more than happy to let Bob Rock shape his sound and the marketing folks shape his style. Which is cool, he shreds. I like Steve. He is a better fit for what OLP want to do, and that's fine.
Mike's made enough money to have a sense of personal integrity with regard to his musical ambition. It just seems to me that the rest of the guys in the band have a yearning for commercial success that Mike doesn't share. There's no crime or fatal flaw in that (though, it's taken me quite a while to accept it).
What I do know, is that the issue is way past its due date.
