I find it interesting that since people have accepted Chantal as a (albeit impartial) part of OLP, everyone was okay with him collaberating with her, but since Avril (whose music is obviously less poppy) was given judgement by everyone separate from OLP, it's horrible that Raine might do something with her.

i gotta say that although im not a huge avril fan, Chantal's music is one million times more pop.i did at one time like avril's music *long ago* but i've never liked Chantal's Music, its just NOT for me. Thats why i cannot understand why people thinks its horrible that raine is collaborating with avril. think of it this way. would you rather him play an awesome riff and shout a chorus, or serenade withhis wife in some corn-factor love song(not to say they would do that) but have you ever heard "Cant make it good".

Actually, Chantal's sound is basically the definition of "Piano Pop" (the genre involving respectable pop singers, mostly female). "Pop" these days is more like your Britney Spears genre. Avril's kind of in a Pop/Punk genre.

I have to hand it to you Rob, you have a way with the definitions! But yes I agree, Chantal is respectable for sure, she actually has talent, something rare in "Pop" these days. :)

i have heard both chantal and avril extensively. Chantal plays what I would call adult contemporary or something like that. It's kind of easy listening, but not very catchy and not very marketable. Avril's music, though it's packaged as 'rock' or 'punk', is just the same catchy, marketable stuff that record companies have been feeding us for years, just w/ a different face.
anyway, the word 'pop' is short for popular, and I don't think there's any debating that avril is more popular than chantal.

well that is a good argument, but while pop was at one time soley popularity, it has morphed into a genre. so basically what you're saying is anything popular is "pop"?

i think either way you look at pop, whether as a genre or as simply what is popular, avril is more pop. she's just like britney spears in many ways: hand picked and promoted by a record company, doesn't write her own songs, catchy songs, expensive videos, etc. the only difference is that she doesn't dress like britney spears and instead of choreograhed (sp?) dancing with an elaborate stage set-up, avril just kind of jumps around with a rock band backing her up (which is much cheaper for the record company).
avril does sing live too, which is something to her credit, and something that britney spears will never do.

I think it's easy to label Chantal as pop because, well, she's definatly not rock. I agree with joel, its more adult contemprory. Even if you don't like her voice, she's GOOD at piano. I heard the song Wayne yesterday. That's a really good song, really different from the rest of hers.

Exactly, it's a genre now. People tend to use the original definition of pop in conversations such as this, while in a more casual setting everyone just uses it as the genre.

who cares about labelling? is it that big of a deal? When you're labelling something you're putting restrctions on it. WHy bother doing that?

sorry not trying to sound mean, but it just doesn't see worth it arguing over labels.

ummmm, anyways.............labelling is important as well. Do you want a radio station that just plays "music"? Most people like choosing from different genres.

That's why they label it.......so people can make choices about what they want to listen to, even if the labels aren't necesarily 100% accurate and tend to bleed into each other, especially with music today that combines genres.

And J-Neli, I'd like my question answered..........whether you like the topic or not.

I tried to avoid this topis, but I wanted to share with youa quote from Avril in the new issue of Ent weekly. I posted this in CK's board.

Here is a piece of an interview Avril Lavigne did with Entertainment Weekly( the new issue Jan 23/30th 04') that I thought you might find interesting.

they were talking about her new upcoming CD.
They asked her if it was heavier because she wanted to make a heavier rock CD. She said she did the CD exactly how she wanted to. BUt didn't make every song more rock. They needed some pop songs for radio.

EW: What is like Then

AL: We aimed to get more catchy ones, but not cheesy pop like some songs off the last record. As soon as I got home from my tour, I was like, "oh my God, I need to write!" So I got together with[Canadian singer-songwriter] Chantal Kreviazuk. We're, like, best friends. And we'd go get a chai tea latte and write a song together every night for two weeks in a row. We had so much fun, because I didn't tell my manager or record company.

I only have this to say. I don't know why people are up in arms over Raine and Chantal heloping Avril. I look at it like this. SHe is asking for advice and help form two older more established artist in Canadian music today. I know Avril sold millions upon millions of CD's, won awards and such. She needs to think about longevity. I am not the biggest Avril fan( I am not really a fan at all) then again I am not a teen girl. I think she could have potential to be around longer if she allows herself to grow as an artist. I for one thin it is great she is getting help from the Maida's.

People who love Raine and Chantal should be happy that someone asked them for help on their CD. That to me means that some aritst found them to have talent enough to ask for help.

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again
