Song Credits in Booklets

Post by MrFeynman »

In the Gravity and SM booklets the songs have either just Raine's name or everyone's names beside them, in brackets. Like this: (R. Maida) or (R. Maida/D. Coutts etc). Does this say who wrote the music for the song or is it for lyrics? But it always says Raine writes all lyrics... does that mean that he also writes most of the music (since most of the songs have just r. maida beside the title) ? The Happiness and Naveed booklets don't have this.. not sure about Clumsy since I don't own it ... So what's the deal !?

I've often wondered this too. I know that Raine does the majority of the writing, but that when they get into the studio, they all give input.

i think its different everywhere you look, because on some of the OLP music videos, they have r.maida, or r.maida and a.lanni, etc etc. but i do know that they all have input.

well, here's what i think, in my band sometimes i'll write a song and bring it into rehersal, the other guys in the band will write they're own parts and have input on the song, but the song is still written by me, other times, in rehersal we'll just start jamming something out from scratch, or someone will have a riff and we'll turn it into a song, and on those occasions it's more correct to say that it was co-written by everyone, rather that by just one person

i assume this is what olp does.

Yeah I guess that makes sense.. you'd think the other guys would have a few more ideas on the musical side of things even if they don't do any of the lyrics. I guess it's like you say and they a lot of that stuff as a group.

Naveed just says that the music was by Raine, Mike, Chris, Jer, and Arnold.

And actually, in Clumsy's booklet:

Carnival, Shaking, Let You Down, The Story of 100 Aisles, and Car Crash are by Arnold, Raine, Mike, and Jer, and the rest were by Arnold and Raine . . . strange that Duncan isn't credited, since he had been with the band for over a year when it came out . . .

that is strange, also seems to show how significant lanni's contribution was.

I have noticed that also. I know Raine writes the lyrics. that is a given. On the first two cd's the rest of the band was given credit for the song.s I think each would contribute some kind of note, riff, or beat for the song. On one interview I read they said Chris wrote a bass line for Starseed.

I know Raine wrote alot of songs with Arnold Lanni. It was only on the SM CD tht he really started writing on his own. I always thought that Raine wrote the lyrics, came to the band with an idea and they would work on the music together to bring the song together. I would think they would get credit then. I guess since no credit is giving Raine writes the lyrics and music and maybe the rest of the band adds their own twist on it, opinions etc. I don't know how they work it out with that. I would like to think that they all work on the songs and it isn't just Raine.

I miss Lanni :(
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

It'd take quite a bit more than a 'simple plan', that's for sure.

I don't know if this is the case with OLP, but I know that some bands will give writing credit to all members of the band on songs that are going to be released as singles even if only one or two people actually wrote the song. This way the whole band gets equal royalties as opposed to (let's say) the singer getting the vast majority and the others not getting much at all. I know, for example, that this is the case for some of Pearl Jam's material.
