Post by liam »

I've seen movies like "Donnie Darko" and "Boondock Saints" but what other Independent films and/or Cult films that you can reccomend?

er, citizen kane wasn't really "indie", but i guess it could be considered "cult". it's more of a film studies movie.

moving on:

secretary
all the real girls
fubar
all kevin smith movies (clerks, mallrats, chasing amy, dogma, jay and silent bob strike back.)
spun
requiem for a dream
cq
rushmore
truth and consequences n.m.
glory daze

also, some foreign:
y tu mama tambien - latin american
vidoq (spelling may be incorrect) - french
an honest dealer (english title) - french
sweet sixteen - scottish (REALLY scottish. it might as well be a foreign language title)
ordinary decent criminals - scottish
the last minute - british

i guess my only question is why the hell would anybody want to watch citizen kane if they weren't studying it?

oh, i forgot to include two movies starring my new favorite, kieran culkin. what an "it" kid he is.

the secret lives of altar boys
and
igby goes down

both were excellent.

we can't forget the #1 classic indie film: pulp fiction

OK, Rushmore is quite possibly the greatest movie ever. Any move that can get Bill Murray nominated for a meaningful award has to be good. I still watch that movie regularly.

Check out "In Waking Life" because it will own you. It's one of those movies that make you think. I'd never have heard about it if not for my ex being in one of her "Oh gee, what trend should I make myself a part of today? Well, I've tried punk and looked like an asshole, so now I'll try to be intellectual but still know nothing about life, but spit out words like I have a brain" kind of moods. The movie isn't too hard to understand, but you just have to watch it to really grasp the concept.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

You guys already covered Boondock Saints and Fubar. Fubar was a Canadian phenomenon in case you've never heard of it.

I don't really know if Fight Club qualifies as cult film, but I fucking love that movie and will recommend it to anyone.

The Kids in the Hall movie, Brain Candy was funny as hell. It was quite under-appreciated.

And let's not forget The Wrong Guy. It's got Dave Foley from the Kids in the Hall, so naturally it's hilarious. It's an older movie, early nineties I think. Good luck finding that one.

Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory has a cult following

why shouldn't willy wonka have a cult following? it's a pretty freaking awesome movie if you ask me and isn't enjoyed by enough people in this world.
