this is from chairpage.com (official website)

10/13/03

A Sydney newspaper ran a story yesterday which has created all sorts of false rumours about Silverchair. Its sensationalised headline has given some people the impression that the band is not going to work together again. Silverchair and their management would just like to set the record straight.

The situation right now is exactly the same as it was after the band finished touring "Neon Ballroom". It is also exactly the same as the group announced when they finished their world tour a few months ago - ie: they are simply taking a break for an indefinite period of time.

The band currently has no recording or touring plans but that certainly doesn't mean that they won't ever record or tour again. It just means that after a really intense few years, they're each spending some time on non-Silverchair activities for a change. This is extremely common for bands who have been together for a decade.

At the moment Daniel is making an album with Paulmac, Chris is doing some producing and recording stuff on the Central Coast and Ben has just finished travelling and is possibly going to feature in an indie film over the coming year. They all remain very good friends and there is absolutely nothing standing in the way of them making music together again in the future.

It is possible that they will all continue to do more non-Silverchair things over the next year or so but once they all get inspired to make more music together then that's exactly what they will do.

-----

this is concerning the new band with daniel and paul mac (dec 11th)

Daniel Johns and Paul Mac have officially announced the birth of their new band - The Dissociatives.

The pair spent about two months together this year, with writing and recording stints in London, Sydney and Newcastle.

The first fruit of these sessions will be revealed when the debut single from The Dissociatives – a song called “Somewhere Down The Barrel” - premieres on Australian radio in February 2004. This will be followed by the Australian release of their self-titled, self-produced, album around April.

Daniel and Paul have also announced that they plan to bring some other like-minded musicians on board for a series of tour dates later next year.

The first seeds of The Dissociatives were sown back in 1997 after Paul remixed Silverchair’s song, “Freak”. At the time Daniel and his bandmates were enjoying their second multi-platinum album and Paul had already racked up a decade in the vanguard of Australian dance music. In 1998, Paul was asked to add “noises” to Silverchair’s third disc, “Neon Ballroom”. Not long after that, he and Daniel began dabbling together in their home studios (the ‘accidental’ results were eventually released as the online EP “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Rock”). Paul was also an integral part of Silverchair’s acclaimed “Diorama” album – performing piano on six songs and guesting with the band during their ARIA Awards performance last year.

The pair’s decision to form The Dissociatives grew out of all these experiences and the fast friendship that formed as a result.

Both Daniel and Paul definitely see their new band as “more than just a side project”. They recently shot a video for “Somewhere Down The Barrel” and they are both focusing completely on releasing their album and touring next year.

While they plan to work separately on other projects in late 2004 and 2005, they hope to eventually make more albums as The Dissociatives.

“Somewhere Down The Barrel” and “The Dissociatives” will be released in Australia and South East Asia by Eleven: a music company through Virgin/EMI. Overseas release plans are yet to be finalized.

well that's comforting . . . I must say if you read the liner notes to diorama it doesn't exactly seem like they're at all unhappy or anything.

I think there's only one word to describe what Stephanie just did to you.

OWN3D!
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

Hello, its obiviously apparent they will eventually split. Dan has grown out of the whole rock sound. He likes the more experimental sound that Paul Mac offers him. This isn't a sudden revelation.

I can't wait until the new Dan/Paul album though :D

Sorry, I was just trying to be an internet douche bag and type the word "owned" and throw a random number or typo in there. It won't happen again.

 It'll happen sooner or later... most likely sooner. I was suprised they made Diorama, to tell you the truth. I'm just glad I got to see them again in NYC this summer, cos I'm pretty sure it'll have been my last chance to see them live. So sad, they're so talented as a band.

but it's not like ben and chris seem opposed to the experimentation that silverchair's been doing.

Nope. But I don't think they're really friends at all anymore. It's gotta suck being in the studio and on the road with people you have nothing in common with... which is probably why they tour so little, record so rarely, and spend so much time doing their own things on seperate sides of the world.

that's true, but they've been able to make the band work despite not being friends very successfully with both neon ballroom and diorama, so what's to say they won't be able to keep doing that?

This is very true. I dunno, I just don't see it lasting much longer. Especially since Daniel's really branching out doing his own stuff now. I hope they prove me wrong.

i s'pose all we can do is hope for the best, though i'm sure whatever dan ends up doing with paul mac or otherwise will be great too. i certainly don't want to see silverchair coming to an end . . . even though diorama was perfect i feel like they have some unfinished business musically.
