I have some insider info that the US is gonna return to space in a big way. How does another manned mission to the moon sound, with plans to create a permanent base there?

i'm surprised that it wasn't better known but there is now a international space station. Also the idea of a base on the moon has been thrown around for awhile now so i wouldn't be surprised. Although i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a US base, it would be international, although with all the antagonism of late who knows

A military base on the moon seems pointless. Unless this base was going to be used as a launch site for missions to Mars, or other planets it seems like it wouldn't be helping anyone. It's pretty sad when the first step towards colonizing beyond Earth is built on the basis of war.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

Why would they build a base on the moon? Venom can you fill me in?

Personally I would rather have them spend that money on new environmental technology and assesment of groundwater than a space station. But i admit I know very little about it........

How about an [i]international[i] space base?

LOL no! The failure of the "international" space station is why this would be built. The cost for the station is much more than its worth and mostly paid for by the US not the international community. A base would serve a much bigger and better purpose for the US and would be worth the money unlike the space station. Yes this would be a step closer to a mission to mars.

and, uh, venom, i know you're a die hard patriot and all, but doesn't the thought of a base, built by any government on the moon make you just a tiny bit nervous?

i mean, it's not unrealistic to assume that this base would have some military function. it's too juicy an opportunity to pass up. any single government having control of something like that would be problematic.

The Chinese are planning on going to the moon for a base as well. If they can do it is another question. However, I feel A LOT more comfortable if the US does so as well. Why would having a base on the moon be problematic? Are we gonna build some huge laser that can wipe a country off the earth? I think not. This isn't the movies. We already have enough nukes to destroy the earth 10 times over. What could possibly be worse about a base on the moon?

Why not make the Moon the starting point towards peace? A place that is weapon free, and where you don't need to worry about all of the conflicts we see here. I don't think this is impossible, and if anything if living beyond Earth is going to happen in the future, then I think this would be the most beneficial starting point.

uh, it may surprise you to learn that the particle beam cannon is a potential reality, and furthermore, some conspiracy theorists believe it already exists in northern alaska (the HAARP project)

that wasn't my point, however. a moon base allows for weapons et al to be stored in a location where they cannot be destroyed. it disrupts the mutually assured destruction deterrent of using nuclear or other WMD's in war.

we got no buisness on the moon, absolutely none besides research. no military, no countries, not even a single flag should be there.

i liked J-Neli's idea, but meh i guess i'm just an idealist.....bombing the shit out of people and carrying around weapons just seems to be the logical way of getting peace these days.....

Why don't we have "no business on the moon"? If it was inhabited by other life I would agree with you but its not.
