BBC-A record number of people were infected with HIV around the world this year, a report says. Figures from UNAids and the World Health Organization put the number of new infections at five million. The report also estimates that three million people died from the disease this year. But it warns that the figures could rise sharply in the years ahead, with Eastern Europe and Central Asia on the verge of epidemics.
The report, which is published ahead of World Aids Day on 1 December, estimates 40 million people around the world are infected with HIV/Aids. Of these, 2.5 million are children. Around 14,000 people are infected with the disease every day.
Officials say the figures are more reliable than previous year's estimates, following improvements in the way the data is collected. People living in sub-Saharan Africa continue to be most at risk. About 30% of people living with HIV/Aids are in this part of the world.
South Africa, alone, is home to 5.3 million people with HIV - more than any other country in the world. In Botswana, 39% of the population is HIV positive, the report says. Two out of three new HIV infections occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Three out four deaths from the disease occur in this part of the world.
However, the report also shows that other countries are standing on the verge of major epidemics. The number of reported infections is rising sharply in China, India, Indonesia and Russia, mostly due to HIV transmission through injecting drug use and unsafe sex.
Dr Lee Jong-Wook, director general of the WHO, said details of the strategy will be released on World Aids Day next week. "This represents an unprecedented drive to increase the number of people receiving treatment," he said. "For '3 by 5' to succeed, however, and for treatment access to increase further in the future the international community must continue to increase its financial and logistical support." Nick Partridge, chief executive of the UK charity Terrence Higgins Trust, welcomed the report.
"The HIV epidemic continues to devastate communities across the world and we're increasingly feeling its impact here in the UK. "Now more than ever, we must step up our efforts to tackle the epidemic in this country, as well as fulfil our responsibilities in the international fight against HIV. "We will fail if we don't understand that we are all part of a global epidemic," he said. "Strong political leadership is vital to promote education, access to treatment for all and renewed vigour in the quest for vaccines and a cure."
Derek Bodell, chief executive of the UK's National Aids Trust, said: "Today's statistics continue to cause us concern. "By now it should be evident to all that HIV does not respect borders."
I decided to check out FOX NEWS to use them as an alternate source for this information. On their website there is no mention of it. There is, however, plenty of talk about the Michael Jackson scandal and the Paris Hilton Sex Tapes. Quality journalism indeed.
Perhaps the fine people at the BBC have simply manufactured these numbers and AIDS really isn’t that big of as problem. Perhaps it’s all just some leftist, liberal plot to throw a monkey into the works. It’s all so confusing!
It was also the top story on the CBC website, though came in fourth to Iraqis at gunpoint on the might juggernaut that is CNN.com.
Out of site, out of mind I suppose.

I agree with a lot of it but if he is gonna attack one news source (FOX NEWS) don't let the BBC be praised and called "fine people". They are just as bad as Fox only they are the extreme other side of the political spectrum. He loses all credibility when he supports the BBC. The BBC is the worst when it comes to the doom and gloom in Iraq and America bashing! We have already established that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle with Iraq. Its no where near as bad as the media paints it but its also not all good. Also I have read that AIDS story all over the media. NOT JUST IN THE BBC! He mentions other sources but just because its not the number 1 story doesn't make them any worse than the BBC!

as i said if you've read the previous journal responce he had about Mike, you would relaize it is him expressing his disgust over what the media spends time covering. Much like you said, it's all for the ratings. Who cares about the non-violent leadership change in Georgia, or the attrocities in Burma, or Sierre Leon. Michael Jackson is where the money is

Actually the BBC and the CBC are probably two of the best popular news stations in the world. They're respected worldwide.
You could make the same argument for CNN or Al Jazeera. They are worldwide names, however this does not mean they are "respected" by everyone. BBC is liberal, not moderate. They are not fair and balanced. Therefore they are no better than any of the others. CBC?
i find CBC have a neutral look. Canadian media believe it or not has always been run by conservitive supporters. Canada is in the middle, they have connections with europe and european ways of thought, as well as France. But we also have had a long term relationship with America, and we have been hugely influenced by your country. therefore our media plays it pretty neutral in all these affairs.

I find the CBC very well put together. It comes across as very profesional and straight to the point, without a bunch of bullshit on top of it, IMO. If you watch a special on anything on CBC news, I guarentee you are going to come out of it with some new knowledge, wheither you choose to agree with it or not. They tend to try to show both sides of a story.
