Raines voice with 5.1 mix of dvd
First off, I love the DVD. Concert bootlegs suck (as do movie screeners), so I am so pumped to have quality concert of OLP. I dont really care about extras and stuff much either. It totally rocks over Nickelback's dvd (which soundec good but just got boring after awile). My only gripe is the major reverb with Raines vocals on the 5.1 mix. The PCM 2.0 mix has no reverb. The 5.1 totally echoes and to me is irritating. Is this to give his voice "surround" or is this a flaw? And will it be fixed? Other than that this is one awesome DVD.
I don't know, it sounds as if someone who was a little inexperienced with 5.1, was guiding the mixing process. Those two back speakers need to be used very judiciously. I'm guessing they were trying to re-create that arena echo in lieu of emphasizing the post-recording augmentation.
I didn't find it all that bothersome though.
A good example of mixing a concert DVD is U2's live in Boston disc. In that DVD, the rear speakers are used principally for the audience reaction and some studio elements (pre-recorded pro tools elements).
Pearl Jam's DVD's rarely make use of those speakers at all. But again, mostly only for crowd noise.
I like this approach because it puts the viewer directly between the live audience and the music which is where I want to be as a viewer. I think they were trying to make the viewer a part of the audience with this DVD - hence the arena reverb.
Who do you think benefits the most from the 5.1 mix?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say - Jeremy. Holy hell. His drums sound so big and they are so prominent in the mix.
Who benefits the least?
Probably Mike Eisenstein. Duncan behind him.

Are you seriouls? I love the effect of hearing his voice echo. It gives it a great "live arena" effect. Especically on Starseed and Are You Sad? I think it's one of the best parts of the DVD. I really didn't care much for the DVD untill I re-watched it in 5.1. The sound is so much clearer. For example if you listen to "The Birdman" you can hear Duncan's bass still playing as Steve starts his solo, which might not be a big thing but it was cool to hear as I've never heard it on any bootlegs or PCM.
But yeah, if you have a good speaker system and you watch the DVD using Dobly 5.1, you'll be blown away by the live effect of the concert. I also think "In Repair" is another song that is benefited from this.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 5.1 mix is awesome. Its just that those reverb effects can be acheived by a receivers DSP settings without messing with the vocals. I just thought it was a bit cheesy and his voice almost overlapped itself from the echo. Not all the time, but some of the time. Whatever has a really cool surround effect. Trust me I think the DVD is awesome.
