To live at home, or not to live at home...

Post by Henrietta »

I'm currently befuddled trying to figure out if the saving money/having no life route (staying at home during college) or the getting in debt up to my ass/having fun route is best (moving out). I know we have lots of people who've done both or whatever here, so I just wanted to see if you had any pearls of wisdom for me. Thus far, three semesters, I've been at home and hating life. I'm not sure if moving to college town USA will make much of a difference...but I have about a week to decide.

Get the hell out .. run far far away.

I took the in debt up to my eyeballs route and moved 3 hours from home for college, best 2 years of my life and my mom and I grew a lot closer once we weren't at each other's throats all the time. We actually looked forward to seeing each other and visiting and talking on the phone. Now, I made the mistake of moving back home once college was over... which come this spring I'm running away again cuz it's hell being back in a tiny bedroom with rules after having my own place and no rules.

Your college experience only happens once (hopefully ) so make the best of it. Have fun, meet new people, don't stay at home and then regret it later ... even though it sounds corny I learned a lot about myself and made a lot of mistakes and then learned from those .. which I think it's how it should be .. being able to screw up and make your own mistakes and then get yourself out of messes all on your own .. I always recommend moving out for school.

Personally, I'll probably stay at home for the first year or two, then move out.

Staying home isn't for everyone, but it's worked for me without any significant problems for 17 years.

Yeah...I think maybe staying at home through high school would be a good idea Rob.

Cass, i'm in the same situation as you. So far for 3 semesters i've stayed at home and i absolutely hate it. the worst part is commuting, it takes me an hour to get to school and it sucks so much. So i'm going to try to some how make it through the rest of this semester and next and then i'm definitely moving out for third year or else i might die.

Yeah, if I do this, it will probably mean I'll be back next fall, unless I get an awesome job this summer. But I figure it will be worth it.

Rob, you said it had worked for you for the first 17 years...that is what I meant. Nevermind, I make no sense.

if i had been living at home and commuting i think i would either not be alive right now or in some sort of mental institution.

seriously though, my friends from high school are very different than me now and i am not the type of person that talks to people in class, so i would have been completely isolated from the outside world, which would have made me probably lose my mind or something :freak:
HARDCORE!!!

OMG. I can't believe I din't think fo you

My mom was like that at first .. just wanted me to stay at home and go to school in my city .. now she tells my bro and I all the time how she wishes we'd move out. I moved home partly because she made me feel guilty for 'leaving her' and I don't really want to her to be alone. Then again, I also moved home partly for my dog too .. my mom had taken him in 2 weeks before I moved back because the new apt. I was moving into didn't allow pets ... I freaked without my puppy though ... cancelled my lease, lost out on $600 and moved home.

Just strangle your step-mom, then everything will be easier. Trust me on this.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.
