If your just looking for something to get you around, you can probably find something for as little as $3-4,000....it'll be shitty, but who really cares.

Mind you, that doesn't include insurance which is a pain in the ass...

what you need my friend, is a 1968 dodge diplomat.
all steel, bench seat.
so lets say some asshole parked on the line at your local topless bar, and that's the only parking spot left because cindy, the babe with the big'un's is dancing tonight. no worries my friend, just take back your parking space, and watch as your tank of a car shreds through that newer, prettier vehicle like a hot knife through butter. then, you can easily get out of your car by sliding on the bench seat over to the passenger side door and there you have it. even cindy will be amazed.

Whenever death may surprise us,
let it be welcome
if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear
and another hand reaches out to take up our arms.
Nobody's gonna miss me, no tears will fall, no ones gonna weap, when i hit that road.
my boots are broken my brain is sore, fer keepin' up with thier little world, i got a heavy load.
gonna leave 'em all just like before, i'm big city bound, your always 17 in your hometown

Actually, if you got for a cheap car, I would suggest a used Volvo... they usually last at least 350,000 miles.
I know here they are the cheapest car to insure too. Considering they are the safest car in the world followed then by a Saab.

Oh come on people, the best cheap car is a 1989 Ford Tempo. Me and the Tempo, we had some good times together, like when I first bought the thing. I drove it home and it was great, then I park it. An hour later, when I try to start the thing, it wouldn't move. So my dad has the ingenious idea to tie the Tempo's bumper to the back of his truck and drive it to get it fixed. Now common sense would say, "Hey stupid, the plastic bumper will rip off," but I just stood there in silence as I watched my dad rip 3/4 of my front bumper off. I then proceeded to nail a block of wood on the front.
Long story short, I got the car working again, and some drunk plowed into it when I left it parked out in the street at night. The lush was going 60MPH down my side street and wrecked it. Fun!

I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.
I'd have to say around 1,000-1,500 ; that's all it takes to get a decent old car. It may be ugly, but if you take your time looking, you can find a good running one for that.
"When looking up there, I just felt whole, like I belonged. Like one day I too would shine my most brilliant. Sitting there also made me think about sitting through services at my little country church back home. About that never-changing congregation of the same sixty-seven people and everyone has known you since before you were born. Now, out here in the real world, everything just seemed more vivid than when I used to sit in that little pew. That pew that was now so, so far away from where I was. I feared I had somehow left God behind there, too. I feared he was somehow just sitting there, saving my seat on the fifth pew from the front row, just waiting on me to come back. I left so quickly, I worried that he may not have noticed I was gone. And, now, I’m just too far away to find. So he’s just sitting there, patiently waiting on me to come back. I closed my eyes and prayed a moment. I hoped more than anything that he could still hear me." -an excerpt from my novella, A Sea of Fallen Leaves.

ah yes, the ford tempo. i've heard many a good story about that car. 60,000 miles later, it needed a new transmission. that's just one of them.
