Rolling Stone is reporting that Dave Havok and Jade Puget of AFI have started a side progect called Blaqk Audio. The band will allow the duo to experament with electronic music that wouldn't fit into AFI's sound. Puget spoke with the magazine "Everything's electronic, no instruments... We've been experimenting -- everything from industrial to ambient stuff. We're just going to see what happens. Dave and I listen to a lot of electronic music. I like all the EBM [electronic body music] stuff, Covenant, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, [Paul] Oakenfold, DJ Shadow and BT."
Blaqk Audio has eight songs completed for a 2004 album, no word on who will be releasing it. AFI themselves go into the studio next summer to record the follow-up to their Dreamworks debut Sing The Sorrow. Puget discussed the link between the band's interest in electronic music and their established sound, "I have a lot of stuff already written... I've been working on a lot of electronic elements that would go into AFI . . . but I don't want it to go too far. AFI -- it's guitar-based and it's instrument-based, but there's a lot of room for that. I love electronic music so much, and that's something I want to explore."
