OLP Steals Riff!?!?

Post by NunoFreak »

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was just listening to The Pleasure And The Greed by Big Wreck, which was released in early 2001 - and I noticed that around 3:45 into the song "Undersold" the guitar riff and effect is almost exactly like the riff and effect from "Whatever", Our Lady Peace's song. This most likely falls to the WWE who originally came up with that riff I believe, but I thought you might find it interesting. Download the song "Undersold" and listen for yourself...

There is a song that Whatever was based upon that Chris Beniot used to have as his theme. The riff is from that song, and he had that as his entrance theme forever. I havent been able to download the song but I pretty sure the WWE has the copyrights.

Yeah, OLP didn't write the Whatever riff. It was based on Beniot's old song.

Pretty much exactly what you just said.

So actually Big Wreck stole a riff from the WWF?

Nah. Probably just similar riffs.

Unless Big Wreck wrote the original Beniot song.

Big Wreck = Awesome.

Who would steal something from such an innocent, hard-working band?

"Undersold?" Interesting. I was not aware of this fact, but I can tell you that the title sounds suspiciously like a wrestling term. Basically, "selling" a move is reacting in a realistic fashion in such a way that you convey to the crowd that it hurts. (Since wrestling is fake, you know  ). For example, if a guy was took a hard slam to the mat on his back, he would then "sell" his back by holding it, moving sluggishly, etc. If he does this poorly (i.e. pops up fighting immediately), he is guilty of "under-selling" (or even no-selling). Essentially, it just looks really bad for the whole suspension of disbelief that is often necessary to one's enjoyment of a wrestling match. You might hear some fans complaining, "The Undertaker just undersold the Stunner! He made Austin (his opponent) look totally weak!"
Anyway, just wondering if anyone's aware of a deliberate wrestling connection to that song. I would assume it predates Chris Benoit's theme (which he started using in early 2000), and WWE borrowed it. Maybe some production guy stumbled across it, made a connection to the wrestling term, and liked the riff. Who knows.

Not that Benoit is ever guilty of under-selling, mind you! ;)

EDIT: I just realized the song was realized in 2001, in which case, Benoit's theme predates it. I really doubt the band would care enough to incorporate a riff from an obscure wrestling theme, so it's probably just coincidence.

the song has nothing to do with wrestling what so ever.

that song rocks. (by the by, everyone has stolen everyone's riffs by now. Even if I haven't heard some guitar riff made like 20 years ago, it's possible i'll think of the same thing. Sometimes it's coincedence, not stealing)
