Should OLP go RAW?

Post by foreverstorm »

In a lot of recent interviews Raine has claimed that, inspired by the recording of Saint Anger by Metallica (which is complet trash), he and the band are trying to go 'raw'. No classy overdubbing, no protools and stuff, just picking out the best parts of his singing plain and simple. I don't agree, I think that by doing it the way he has been doing it, we get a fuller impression of the sound in his HEAD, not what he can do with his voice alone. The talent stuff he can keep at the live shows, but I do think keeping a distinction betweel live performances and his album is a good decision. Any ideas on wheather he's making a wise decision for the future of the band or is he lost in his more acoustic art? I really love OLP songs, and the way the studios have worked them really give them depth and lasting appeal.

On one had im interested in what they can do singing live off the floor because "Bring Back The Sun" was done like that and its probably the best song on Gravity. On the other hand Metallica's album is crappy and not just because the songs are bad. The drums sound like garbage and i really dont want to see that on an OLP album.

Cheers.

Well the reason Bring Back the Sun is a good song is because its really well written and executed. The problem is though, that Bring Back the Sun IS a slow and relaxed song. Meditative. But can you really get the speed and the freedom out of this new method to make more lively songs? This is what we're wondering. I mean we all love the vocal pyrotechnics Raine is famed for in his albums, but when he's doing it live he hardly risks it.

They said when recording Naveed and Clumsy they tried to keep it as simple as possible and doing everything as they would do it live. So if they are trying to go back to that I don't know many people that would object. Unfourtunately, I don't know if it will turn out that way.

And don't insult the crappy wresling names. They rock the cosmic taco.

It's the recording style of St. Anger we're talkin about here, Clumsy is a slightly different, so is Naveed. And what's with the wrestling fettish all of a sudden? It's gay.

I say......do what ya want, we're merely fans its not like everybody on the CM can come up with a majorty rule and the guys are gonna be like "whoh ok we'll go with what you say"

St. Anger blows because their whole mentally going INTO the studio was mental, and that newbie member is garbage, and his voice is horrid.

Actually, Robert wasn't a member of the band yet when they recorded St. Anger. Bob Rock plays bass on the album. *pauses for groans from the peanut gallery* Regardless, St. Anger is a terrible album. I was greatly disappointed. (Yes, I like Metallica.)

I'm hoping that OLP's "raw" sound is a bit better than Metallica's attempt on St. Anger. I've never seen Metallica live (), but I've heard live shows, and they are definitely not a bad live band. In fact, they're very good. So, there's no reason St. Anger should've sucked so bad. Yet it did. Which scares me when thinking about the next OLP album. Let's just hope they make sure Jer's snare doesn't sound absolutely horrid before they record.

Having heard No Warning, Walking In Circles, and Wipe That Smile Face Off Your Face, it doesn't sound like it's turning out to be like St. Anger

I should rebuttle my last statement.........I was a fan of Metallica before St. Anger  and yeah i totally forgot that Robert came on after the actual recording was taken care of.

If the recording quality of OLP's new cd is anything like that of St. Anger, I think it's safe to say a lot of people will be turned off of OLP. St. Anger, in general, is a bad cd. There's no redeeming qualities to it, and it sounds worse than a bootlegged show. If OLP lets Bob Rock do that to them, oh man, you think the bitching about OLP is bad now? Hah.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

agreed....and to further that, if the feedback seems worse on WTSOYF than Gravity, I won't come back to the CM because I'll wanna put a 9mm to my forehead because of all the beyotching
