mine is 12x but only burns at 4, and only accepts 650mb/74min discs. WTF?

Since you're from Salt Lake you should just go to www.ebccomputers.com i bought mine from there way cheap, and its fast and reliable.

And where is that?

Ours was way expenseive at 4 too. But that was when they first came out.
