Wizard's First Rule...

Post by One-Eye »

I know several of you are big fans of this book, so I thought I'd ask you. I'm a little ways into it, not far enough to form a coherent opinion, but I've noticed it falls into most of the standard fantasy cliches, which were only interesting the first 500 times I read them, so I was wondering if there's anything spectacular about this book that merits my spending 800 pages on it. Again, I don't know, but I don't like committing to books that aren't worth it, especially long ones. Your opinions, good or bad, would be welcome. Thanks!

just read it, what do you have to lose?
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

WFR is chock-full of clichés. However, it starts to lose those near the end. And after the first book, that shroud of clichés is thrown aside, and the books become their own.

Thanks, Rob. I'm 100 pages in, and it's getting better. Might as well stick it out. If it sucks, I just won't read the rest of 'em...

A lot less lame once you get past the first book. :P

And a lot more adult once you get further into the series (Alex can attest to that! ;))

They're tasteful.

Well, the first one(s) are.

One's mildly graphic.

Hmm... I wonder if Naked Empire (new one coming out next month) will have anything smutty it in...?

Also, the books (after WFR) get into political satire. Very good stuff.
