Your character has skill levels which you can view by right clicking and scrolling up and down in the upper left hand menu that appears. When you use your skills (ie, in combat, if you are wearing light armor and you deflect a blow) a certain number of times, they go up a number. Once the sum of your skills goes up a certain amount, it'll say something like "you should rest and meditate on what you have learned." at this point, if you take a nap somewhere, a little window will pop up and congratulate you on having gone up a character level. You get 3 little coin icons to place next to 3 of a list of abilities, which makes them go up one. For example, you might decide to put a coin next to "Intelligence". If 2 skills in the intelligence category have increased since your last level promotion, it'll say "x2 intelligence", and putting the coin next to that will make your intelligence level go up TWO points. This can happen with like x3 etc as well if that's how many times a skill in that discpline has gone up.
Whew.
In conclusion, read the damn booklet

Thanks.
I hate those damned flying things; "Cliff -" something. My accuracy with my sword isn't all that great yet, so I miss a lot. And I find I can only hit him when I jump.
Just fighting one, my Short Sword, Acrobatics and Block skills all went up.
Right now I'm doing the first mission for the Temple. I have to go to seven places, read something at each, etc... I STILL haven't gotten to the first one, thanks to those damned flying things making me fight for about 10 minutes, then (usually) die.
I got to the first shrine. I think I have to find something to put on the shrine. "Muck" or "Smuck" or something like that. Any idea where I can find it? I'm not able to ask people in the game about it.
Ahh but then you havnt realized the true beauty of Diablo 2. Playing Diablo single player is fine enough, but playing it On b.net is where it really shines. Diablo isnt about choices and pointless text. Its a game solely based on items and skills invested in your character. Diablo may be a lot simpler than most RPG's when you first look at it but really its a lot deeper than most people think. The depth is just found in items and such rather than story line.
If you want a game with a lot of "choices to be made" try out Baulders Gate 2. Now theres an RPG. 150 freaking hours of goodness.
Ahh, but I have discovered the joys of Diablo on B.net. I just don't think of it as an RPG.
And trading for good items got screwed up on B.net when SoJs (SoJ = Stone of Jordon) got too wide spread, and became less and less valuble (I myself had 3 when I stopped trading all together). They used to be the Holy Grail for D2 players, but it all got ruined when people figured out how to duplicate items (before patches put a stop to it).
Cliffracers are a bitch and a half. I once had one attack me in the middle of fuckin' Ald'ruhn.. wtf? The guards came and killed it though.
Muck can be found anywhere, silly. It's just another food/ingredient type item, like scuttle, saltrice, bloat, etc. I never did have the patience to do all 7 pilgrimages though.. good on ya.

They had duping problems in Diablo 1 as well.. hacks never make games more fun.
Would stealing books from and killing two Hlaalu be a bad idea? I need the money, and the books are worth so much!
Unless you can think of another good way to make some fast money...?
I've got the first 3 shrines, and I need a silver longsword to sacrifice at the next one.
I love the blessings I get at each one. The first was a temporary Feather (carry a lot more books this way, lol), the second was temporary Levitation (very fun to kill folks with this one, just strike and then go up, so they can't hit you), and the third was something like +10 Speed (I think?).
