I don't think that's what happened, but I could be wrong. Steve definitely mentioned one time about how he'd learnt to play a song just from listening to the CD - it was something off SM, maybe Are You Sad? but I'm not 100%sure.

Well...I think that Steve most probably tabbed out the older OLP songs and learned them before he even joined the group.

Thats what I think and thats what I woulda done
