I think the lyrics in Theif are some of OLP's best, they leave alot of room for interpretation and that's probably what I like most about OLP, how they leave the meaning of the song up to the listener. It gives everyone a chance to relate and while the song was written for Mina Kim the listener can relate it their own experences. I can't stand songs that are so straightforward, it's annoying! I heard this country song in a record store the other day and it was really verging on cheesyness with how its lyrics left zero room for interpretiation, It made me mad. The open lines that don't really refer to a specific event but apply to anything you want them to make the songs classic. Any refernce to a ceritan even in recent history seem to limit songs for me and makes me think that 'Since it mentions this it only appies to then, Time have changed.' OLP doesn't do that. Naveed could have come out in the (late) 80's or even today and it would still apply. I love OLP's open lyrics, and a message to Raine: Don't EVER change them!
Is the world really a subway?
Why can't you live here anymore?
Do you believe?
Do you belong?
What are the reasons we ask why?
Is life waiting for you?
Are you waiting?
Are we all innocent?
Are you really waking up slowly?
Why can't you live here anymore?
Do you believe?
Do you belong?
What are the reasons we ask why?
Is life waiting for you?
Are you waiting?
Are we all innocent?
Are you really waking up slowly?
I think she died in the summer of 1999 or 2000. I'm not sure though.
I actually have two terms for that: moment-songs and feeling-songs. The moment-songs are very descriptive and don't leave a lot of room of interpretation. The feeling-songs are a lot opener, more people can relate to them.
I love feeling-songs, but sadly, I can only seem to write moment-songs >_<

I know that Raine has said in numerous interivew that he doesn't like to talk about what his lyrics mean. He wants it to be open for interpation for anyone. For each indiviual to take from the lyrics and songs what they will. What Raine might have in mind may be so totally differnt then what we might think. There are only a handful of songs he has said what they were about(somewhat) or influenced by.
I will say this. I think Raine has come into his own as a songwriter in the past few years. I love his lyrics and find him inspiring. I don' think he realizes how brilliant his lyrics are sometimes.
as for songs. I always thought in IAH that they said HAS ANYONE PAINTED FEARS ON BEDROOM WALLS THAT SAVE US FROM OUR(SOULS). He just leaves it at from Our and goes into the and hey is Anybody Home part.
With Thief where he says I can be your... I think it is mean to be as I can be your... What ever it is you need me to be , I will be for you wheter it is friend, lover, support, etc. I think that is why he leaves it like that.
as for Mia. I don't know when she died, but I know that last July they were doing Theif in their set. I guess it was the anniverssary of her death. I also know a fe wyears ago, they played it on the club crawl tour for this kid who was in a COMA. Something about his mom telling the band and they dedicated it to him. I think by the end of the tour the kid came out of a coma, but I think it was nice they played it for him.
I know it took me forever to figure out whey 4AM was never mentioned in the song. (this was back in 97 when the CD came out). I didn't know it was a play on words.

for 4AM there are two parts to the story:
1) Raine wrote the song in only a couple minutes at 4 in the morning
and
2) he wrote it for his father whose initials are A.M.
so the song was written FOR(4) A.M. at 4a.m.
hopefully that made sense

Is there something good, something more?
Is there anything worth dying for?

I've loved you all along"
He and his father, from what I've heard, were kind of in a love-hate relationship. Unfortunately, it was mostly the latter. 4am was Raine's way of saying he was sorry about it all. At least that's what I got from it...
