I suggest Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible - it's an ambitious read, but it skips around between different people's points of view, so that's partly why it's so long. I haven't read any of Kingsolver's other books, but I've heard good things about The Bean Trees, which is a bit shorter.
I've heard about the Poisonwood Bible. Isn't it told by 4 different sisters or something? Apparently it's good but it's not really my style.... not into the Christian Missionary stories myself.

Yeah, they're 4 daughters of a missionary father, but I didn't really pay much attention to the religious parts. It focuses more on the stuff going on in the Belgian Congo in the late 50s.
