A_Primetime_Fool wrote:Hey everyone,

I haven't posted before, mostly because I'm not really dedicated enough to be an avid message board member, but this particular thread has gotten me really interested and I just have to share my thoughts so I can be yelled at (or maybe even agreed with). But yeah, I'm a long time fan - a good 7-8 years now, OLP is my favorite band of all time, I used to post on the CC a lot a few years back, etc etc etc... Just a few items so you guys know I'm not a naïve newbie to the world of OLP.

Anyway, even though OLP's music speaks to me in a way that no other music comes close to, for the past year I've been siding more and more with fabio_kun's opinions in his original post.

But to me, it's not the ho-hum album cover, the dissapearance of Sol, uninspiring videos, or any of the things that come with the music... my main gripe is the music itself. Now don't get me wrong here, Gravity is a great album, but the problem is that for the first time I'm not feeling the music like i used to.

Now don't call me a traitor or anything for having these opinions, just hear me out for a second, and tell me you can't identify with this:

There is a reason we are such hardcore fans of OLP. It's not just because we like the chorus of a few songs, it's not because we like the bands' attitude, if you are anything like me, you love OLP because the music makes you feel something that can't be reproduced by any other music. When I pop Naveed into my CD player, I'm taken away with the gritty and intense emotions that fill the record. When I listen to Clumsy the clashing chords, drums, and Raine's vocal "whine" penetrate my soul. When Happiness... is playing, I can close my eyes and be completely enveloped in the peaceful-yet-fierce atmospheric sound unique to that collection. When I listen to Spiritual Machines (ignoring the RK narrations that got a bit tiresome over time) I feel this intangible aura linking all of the songs together into what I think is OLP's best work. This is most definiately goosebump-worthy music.

Now the problem is this: When I pop Gravity into my CD player, I totally love the music, but the goosebumps and the ethereal sensations are largely absent. The music sounds great - it doesn't matter to me how complicated it is, just as long as I like it - but when I close my eyes and concentrate on the emotions that Gravity gives me, I get distracted very easily - almost like I'm trying to relive some lost glory only found in the earlier cds. There just seems to be this unexplainable hollowness that accompanies the tracks on Gravity. Don't get me wrong, the CD absolutely rocks - but that's the problem, all it does is rock.

If you became an OLP fan years ago, you know what I was talking about above. You know about the intangible effect the first four albums had on you. And maybe it's just me, but since then the feeling hasn't been there. And I know I can't do anything about it, and I know it's not my band, and blah blah blah... but I'm just stating the simple fact... it's kinda sad that I haven't gotten any new goosebumps in the past year.

Cheers.

primetime fool........welcome to the world of modern rock homeboy, thats the way it is. As fans we need to "roll with the punches", so to speak.
I completely agree with you when you spoke of how the different albums made you feel; very well put! But I have to say that would pisses me off the most is people that beat Gravity down like a dead horse. (I'm not pointing at you, there are many on the CM who gripe too damn much about Gravity)
I think what makes me the hardcore fan of OLP that I am (and it took seeing them live on the "Worlds a Blister Tour" to fall in love with um) is that no matter what, I find those freakin ways that make me realize how much I love OLP.
So what if Gravity is nothing but rock..........what about the intensity Raine brings every time he sings "Not Enough", or the way he gets down into a crouch position, climbing, during "Whatever", or the way that everybody worships the guys when "Bring Back the Sun" is being played...

That's why I still love OLP....Gravity's different, but no less amazing OLP.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments about my post... I've been thinkign that for a while but I couldn't put it into words, until suddenly it all just came out.

But anyway... I can imagine that some people put down Gravity a bit too much, I know I do in my mind sometimes. See, if the album came out from any other band and I picked it up, I wouldn't bad talk it at all. It's just, as an OLP record, I expected more.

I know that bands change and evolve over time, and we need to "roll with the punches," but I just can't help getting a little alarmed when a band that I see as refreshingly original, hauntingly deep, and largely independent leaves their producer of 4 albums to go to Metallica's producer. Hm. Years ago I remember the band talking about just how happy they are that Sony Canada gives them almost complete creative freedom, so the music is pretty much untainted by the industry. Fast-forward a few years and now Raine is celebrating the fact that Bob Rock told him to simplify his lyrics, cut down on the whining, and "be the rock band they've always wanted to be." Hm again. Something's just not right there...

So that's where I have to disagree with you, yes Gravity's different, and you have to "roll with the punches" (I remember before Happiness... came out Mike said in an interview that if people don't like their new music, they should just stop listening). And yes, Gravity is an amazing album. But looking back at their other masterpieces that succeeded as a more than just pure rock... I just can't bring myself to think this is amazing OLP.

That doesn't mean I'm going to stop being a fan, it just means that unless they change in a way I'm not expecting them to (what, with Bob Rock album #2 on the horizon), OLP is evolving away from me (and many others), and towards MTV - and I'm not going to be able to feel the same connection I once did.

Oh yeah, and I'm also not saying that Gravity doesn't have it's amazing moments... The intensity in Not Enough is great, Whatever is just an awesome song all-around (I'm counting it under Gravity), Bring Back the Sun is a great track with a lot of the old OLP emotion, and All For You, with the crazy drums, is just one of the most original songs I've ever heard (it's rare when the lyric part of the song is 100 times more catchy than the chorus)

It's just that these moments are too few and far in between for my tastes

I just feel bad for people losing the love over Gravity.........I'm hoping to GOD album 6 turns it around for you people.

I know I'm failing when I'm not helping people smile through "the pain" of Gravity.

Oh yeah, and I'm sorry for bringing up this topic again...

I haven't looked back at many previous threads, but I'd be willing to bet this has been debated about eleventy-billion times since Gravity came out.

Oh well 8-)

I'm not sure i would be able to appreciate gravity as much as i do if it wernt for the other albums.

Not that its a great cd, but i dont think it would of meant nearly close as what it does to me now if i hadnt seen the devolpment of the band through the albums.

The first time i listened to it, i thought 'what the hell is this? this isnt olp!' but knowing that crazy feel i get every time i listen to clumsy or sm, i took another look at it. low and behold, i liked it a little more everytime i listened to it!

i think it takes a true fan to look at it and say, 'maybe this isn't their best work, but what they did before meant so much to me, im not going to just forget them over this. ' and maybe see beyond it, into the future.

i have to admit i wasn't to open to the suggestion even a couple months ago, but im starting to realise i should be. A_Primetime_Fool, nicely put.
