J-Neli wrote:SOT maybe could have done without the close ups of Raine, but it was a live video, just like IAH and Naveed, nothing wrong with that.

But IAH and Naveed also had some sort of concept outside the live performance. SOT didn't.

Now for the actual topic. I can really understand what Fabio means with his first post. I'm worried too. Gravity isn't a bad album, but when I compare it to their former records it doesn't really live up to them. Sure, the band is happy with it and everything. But that doesn't mean that I am happy with it.

i was thinking the same thing fabio, i'm still a loyal supporter but something is wrong, i have a bad feeling in my stomach when i think about current olp, and did you notice that they are becoming the anti-thesis of what they orginally talked about in interviews, things they said they would never do they are doing, i believe raine said "you have to be careful in this business, you enter as an artist, but if your not carfeful you'll end up a entertainer". I love olp, but nopw they're went from a almost godlike state, to being a good reliable rock band. I find myself respecting people Like IME and Matt Good, they both recently put out albums where they decided they didn't care anymore, they would make music, on there terms, if it freaked the shit outa people they didn't care, olp seems to have done the opposite. look at some of the early vids, "Hope" "Birdman" , and some of the earlier songs like "Annie" "Carnival" "Under zenith" and "Carcrash", somehow i don't think any of those songs would make teh cut on a new album, they're to risky for them nowa days, when "Bring Back The Sun" is considered the strange Edgy track on a album you know somethings, diffrent, i love teh song alot but christ it's no more out there then 4AM.
"How can we justify spending so much on destruction and so little on life?" Matthew Good

"The white dove is gone, the one world has come down hard, so why not share the pain of our problems, when all around are wrong ways, when all around is hurt, i'll roll up in an odd shape and wait, untill the tide has turned.....with anger, i'm dead weight, i'm anchored"- IME, God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas) ^ Some say this song is about a terrorists thoughts before 911

"Pray for the sheep" Matt Good
"But it's alright, take the world and make it yours again" Matt Good

I felt it in the wind, and i saw it in the sky, i thought it was the end, i thought it was the 4th of July.

While al this was going on the whole time i was just thinking "maybe they just want more fans to keep up with them, more die hard people (like us the CMers)." i mean shit... who doesn't want more and more sold out shows across the world... << look its not even just one Continent anymore. And next i must say I think OLP's trying to redefine themselves... i don't think they want to make "Smell the Glove" and go start playing gigs in Japan.

yes this is getting kinda old but its still a discussion about OLP and this is an OLP board...

I'm not worried about the band. Hey if they're happy than I'm happy because an unhappy band means no more music.

ya it's not a bad thing but for them to go there for like 3 months and tour wouldn't really be a good thing. I guess in a sense its a good idea to get the music out there but to do that much traveling and playing in front of pretty bare crowds I'd say it would cause a bit of burn out.

Fabio_kun wrote:Hey everyone.

I've been thinking a lot about Our Lady Peace lately. I used to be a HUGE fan a couple of years ago, then I started enjoying heavy metal and progressive rock, so I kind of stopped listening to OLP for a while, but luckly I stared listneing ot them all over again, I guess you can tell, cause I'm always online at the HUB (as olponline) and I've been posting a lot here.

But I get really sad when I see what OLP is becoming. They really aren't the same band they used to be... Spiritual Machines was certainly their best work. Suddenly Mike Turner leaves the band, and we have a new guitarist, then a new producer. They just dumped what was OLP's second brain, Arnold Lanni.

From what I hear the band saying on interviews, they keep saying they are happy like they've never been before, but to be honest I just can't believe it. Just listen to old OLP and compare them to Gravity OLP, how can THIS be the OLP they've always wanted to be?

They've always made relativly complex music such as Hello Oskar, One Man Army, Stealing Babies, Wonderful Future...
How can a band suddenly change from such deep complex music/lyrics to things such as Innocent, Do You Like It, Story About A Girl with poor lyrics and musical structures... :(
Whenever I think of this, I get really sad.

My first disappointment begain with the cover for Gravity, when I first saw it I almost punched a wall... That is one of the worse covers I've ever seen. I know that before Gravity they had Spiritual Machines, a quite complex and heavy album in terms of subject, but one of the most original videos out there such as In Repair, great artwork by Oli... and now ridiculous MTV type of videos where Raine tries to be all sexy (in SOT video)... such as SOT and Innocent... I don't even have to say a word about the cover of Gravity.

Well, now they come up with this Live album, which was another disappointment, specially because it's got only 14 tracks... come on, how can a band like OLP who has 5 studio albuns make a live album, which has been expected for ages, with only 14 tracks... that is SO damn sad.

To be honest, I'm very pessimistic about their album #6. I'm afraid of what Bob Rock might do with the band (if they pick him as their producer). And also I don't know what exacly Steve will add in terms of song writting and musical structure...

I heard Our Time Is Fading, and I got so happy. In my opinion, it's far superior than the stuff in Gravity... and Not Afraid was alright, not that impressive.

It's not that I don't want OLP to change, and that I think they should remain the band from Clumsy or Happiness, or Spiritual Machines, no it's not that... I just don't like their change, and the thing is that they can't make every single fan happy. And they actually changed a lot from Happiness... to Spiritual Machines, huge amazing change.

Sellout? Well... I guess I could use that term. They seemed to have had this desire of being big in the US for ages, and I think that by taking the path they took with Gravity, they're going on the right way.

I know it's bad comparing bands, but I'm gonna do it anyway. You can see Matt Good for example, he seems to be making the type of music he's always wanted to make, without changing as much as OLP, in terms of sort of selling souls to record companies. You can't deny that OLP is in the hands of record companies.

I think I've said enough.
Some will agree with me whilst others won't.

Please, discuss.

Cheers.

All I am going to say is that actually recorded alot of the shows off the SM tour. The Live CD was suppose to be releaased last year. They went in the studio to work on it and came up with new songs-which is why we have Gravity.

All I will say is that if you outgrown OLP for whatever reason then stop being afan. I am tired of reading how people say they don't like the band anymore, then stop listening to them. I am not saying you aren't entitled to not liek the new stuff or the direction, but afterwahile it is tiresome to read it over and over. Move on then. I have outgrown alot of bands I never thought I would.

Also getting back to the Music. How do you know that what they are making now isn't the music they don't want to make. I don't think OLP really care about sales as much as their record company does. They have always been happy to release music and get it out there for people to hear.

I said it before and i will say it again. Gravity, GOOD BAD OR INDIFFERENT at least they are still able to release music. I for one am glad about that. I rather have them around then not.

As for Mike Turner. That was a really hard decision on both parts. Not only was Mike their guitarist, but also a friend. I am sure they tried to make it work on both sides till it reached apoint it wasn't working out for wither side. I am sure that even though they may disagress musically, they still respcet one another. Also, I had a feeling in May 2001, that Mike wouldn't be with them much longe.r Just from talking tohim. I only hope they can repair the friendship with him. I don't think they have spoken to him yet or vice versa. it is still probably hard on both parties.

J-Neli wrote:okay, where to start...

first off, there definately is more behind this Mike/Raine story than we know (at least until the "behind the music" special comes out  ) Mike is a fantastic guitarist, but obviously him and the band were headed in different directions. He pretty well brought in the idea for SM, and I bet it was kinda difficult for the rest of the band to really get into it. It was more like "ya, ok, we can do that, we are an intelligent band after all". But as we all know from school or work or whatever, if one person is persistent about ideas that he has that are not liked by the rest of the group than it pretty well sucks. I think with Mike in the group they would have possibly split up after SM.

Raine said the creative differences started during Spiritual Machines.

I dunno about the "sellout" part. I don't think they have sold out.

One of my major reasons is the live album.

Yes it is saturated with Gravity songs, but if OLP expects to attract a throng of new fans with a live album, they are kidding themselves (and I'm sure they don't think this way).

I think it is a notice to longtime fans that they know we are out there, somewhere out there (please hold the applause 8-) )

They could have done more with it, but maybe the DVD will really give us what we want and more.

I agree with you 100% fabio_kun. I think along with all the changes you've mentioned that the band has become more unfriendly. I've notice a huge difference from the SM tour to the Gravity tour.

I also really miss Mike. He was so good to the fans and was very interactice during the shows.

I have hopes for the new album, but OLP has almost slipped from my favorite band slot. Matt Good moves right up the ladder. I have a lot of respect for that guy.
