MATTHEW GOOD - The man behind the myth

Post by Fabio_kun »

I suppose there might some Matthew Good fans here :)

Well... I'm brazillian, so basicly no one here knows him or Our Lady Peace, which sucks, but I gotta live with it. Being an OLP fan sort of led me into Mr. Good's direction as well.

I only have one MGB album, AUDIO OF BEING. I had the chance to buy this one when I went to London (UK) in December, last year... this was the ONLY MGB album I found, but luckly I managed to get the limited edition version of it. If I could, I'd buy all his albums cause he fucking owns.

Anyway... I have listened to a couple of tunes out of Avalanche, but I can't tell wether or not the album is good. So for those of you who have it, what are your impressions on it, being his first real solo album?

Is it selling well in Canada? For some reason I always get the feeling his not as big as OLP even in Canada.
Does he get, by any chance to played in American radios, or TV?

Thanks guys :)

Cheers.

I can tell you this for sure, I live in Detroit and they play Matt Good on the radio frequently. If I listen to the radio for a 4 hour stretch, they will play Matt Good, or at least the Matt Good Band.

The other questions, though, I couldn't help ya with.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

The new MG album is awesome. It and Beautiful Midnight are my favorite. I'd recommend the album to anyone.
As far as hearing MG in the states, where I live I never hear him. No one has even heard of him. Oh well, there loss. He's my little secret. :D
The album went Gold in Canada I believe. As far as I know, there's no US release date.

Hope that helps!

The new album is amazing however if you only liked songs like Carmelina, and Anti Pop on Audio of Being you may not like it. Avalanche sways more towards the "advertising on police cars" feel. While there are rockers the whole album has more of a toned down epic feel to it.

*comes back from the dead*

Avalanche is amazing. but the most upbeat song is 21st Century Living, and that's technically only a chorus anyway. if you like the slower songs, you'll like it.

I've heard from friends [one in Texas] that Matt's been mentioned as of late on their radio stations. The Future is X-Rated [off of Beautiful Midnight if you didn't know that, you probably did though] was actually on the soundtrack for an MTV tv show back in 2001, but no one really cared, heh. Anti-Pop might've been played on MTV2 one or two times since its release.. I'm not sure. That's about the extent of it in the US, I guess. I don't hear anything from him on my radio stations and I'm in Georgia. And like Theo said, he's releasing Avalanche worldwide minus the US soon, so that should tell you something.

Look into getting Beautiful Midnight if you can. It's the best MGB album, in my opinion.

Hope you enjoy.

Why doesn't he release the album in the US? You know, that country is kind of a big market, and if you want album sales or recognition, sell it here. It's a great idea. Millions of people + good album = possible album sales. I guess my thinking is wrong though.

yeah really he doesn't, he also has mentioned that if you look at who dominates the american music scene and ask yourself, do you really WANT to be popular there?

Oh yes, I must have forgotten, America is the devil. Jesus, look at your music scene. Your music blows just as bad as here. We all follow the same music trends, yet you say we're worse. You still listen to Snow for christ's sake! At least we had enough common sense to let his horrible career die in 1992.

The way I see it is, you have three good bands, tops. You have OLP, Matthew Good, and Moneen. The rest is just garbage. So please, keep producing more music like Avril Lavigne, and this time, you can keep that trash. We don't want her here.

you seem confrontational today.........Matt made taht comment 2 years ago and it was in regards to the boyband, popstar, and fake ass rock star trends tahtw ere floating around, don't worry matt hates Canadian musicians too, i believe canada has a larger rock tatse, or songwriter taste, probably because as you mentioned before, we have really really shitty popstars

If you had a larger, better rock star taste, then how do people like Avril Lavigne, Chad Kroeger and.....sorry, but I can't name another Canadian rock band. The only other ones I know are OLP, MG, Moneen, and Sum 41. All I know is when I used to watch Much Music, I could only stand to watch a select few bands, and the rest made me sick.

It's just how music goes. There has to be total shit out there to make the good bands seem that much better. For every OLP, you have to expect a Nickleback and three other rock bands that suck it hardcore.

No you got this wrong. He mentioned that maybe if he worked really hard on opening and touring with somebody in the states he would most probably crack the market down south, but it's not that he doesn't want the popularity or recognition. He is already content with his status right now in Canada and he's now 31 years old, he doesn't want to do the touring and opening business anymore, yet if he gets popular down, he'll be happy. One thing is for sure, Matthew Good does want to be recognized, to be played on MTV and to be exposed is better than having the millions deprived from good music (in his opinion). He makes a total valid point here, and for those musicians that think "I don't want to be popular because MTV sucks", think of it, if you're so goddamn good, why don't you try to uplift the population's music taste and BE the dominant yourself?

"My goal ...is to uplift people as much as I can; To inspire them to realize more and more of their capacities for living meaningful lives; Because there certainly is meaning to life."

I made a post about it!

I don't like how he compared himself to classical music geniouses, considering he's not half as talanted as the worst of them.

I think I overrated him too much before, he's not that brilliant after all.

Not to mention, Radiohead has that teenage like attitude as well.

I agree. I don't know how well he'd do here, though, because he's not pop punk or rap or anything. It might go over the heads of 75% of the general popular music audience, anyway. You don't really have to THINK about much of the music in the top 40 charts. Not that that makes it any less "good." People like simplicity and fun..ness. Can't blame them. One of my favorite bands right now is Good Charlotte, mainly because it's fun. *shrug* And if you don't look a certain way, then you probably wouldn't make it anyway. A 31 year old disgruntled Canadian singer, complete with black rimmed glasses, probably wouldn't go over too well with the chickies in high school without a complete makeover, and I highly doubt he'd go for anything of that nature. Imagine him on TRL. Not that that has anything to do with anything, it's just an amusing thought.

Odin - Matt compared himself to them? Or someone else did? If it was Matt.. hmm. Humble. Heh.

Well the first thing my friend said after he saw the Avalanche cover was: "Matt Good turned emo!"

He said if people want to listen to an actual composer with a disturbing mind listen to Bartok or Rachimanioff, is he implying that his music is on the caliber of these two musicians that's why his music is so differientiated from Linkin Park?
