Affirmative Action (and so on.)

Serious discussion area.

arg... my group is doing a panel on affirmative action in public speaking and i have to explain the benefits of it. how stupid will i sound?

"um... affirmative action is good because... um... we've discriminated against minorities in the past and uh... it's time we made up for it or something... and we do that by giving minorities unfair advantages over others... cause...uhh... that's only fair."

Well, just on the whole race thing..

I was reading the newspaper today, and apparently two women from North Carolina (I believe) are sueing Southwest Airlines because the lady who came over the intercom told all the passengers "Eenie Meenie Miney Mo, Pick a Seat we have to go" and they are calling it a racist hate crime, because the original rhyme used the "N word". I find it completely stupid.

That's not the original version, though.

my solution:

approach podium.

say: the benefits of affirmative action

say: nnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeee for 3-5 minutes.

note: this solution will not work. it is intended as humour.

I was watching that new Bill Maher show last night, you know, that guy who had his Politcally Incorrect show cancelled because he said something not politcally correct on his show about 9-11. Anyways, they had this stupid black guy on there answering a question about affirmative action. He honestly believed that because blacks were oppressed years ago, that they should get all benefits over white people. The thing that bothers me is that no one questioned if he was a racist. I am sure if any of the other white people said affirmative action was wrong, some one would have gotten on thier asses and called them a racist or something. That seriously pisses me off. How is Affirmative Action relative to today's standards? I wish I was there so I can ask him that. I want to know why I didn't get into U of M, but a kid with nearly an entire point lower than me on his GPA got in. He had lower grades, test scores, and less extracurricular activities than I did, yet he got in because he was fucking light brown.

it's reverse racism. plus, i kind of do give credit to the fact that yeah we treated african americans and other minorities like crap in the past, but the key word is PAST. i really don't think anything we do could 'make up' for the things we did. and besides, why should I be punished for something that my ancestors may or may not have done? what is it my turn in history to see how it is when things suck or something?

What pisses me off is that I have to pay for what my ancestors didn't do. They moved to America from Poland and Germany just before WWII. Last time I checked, that slavery thing ended in the 1860s, not the 1940s. And it's not like my grandparents went around burning crosses and committing hate crimes, so why should I have to pay? Fuck, they should just go back to Africa and find out how unaccepted they are over there. Everyone has it easy here, but will do anything to punish the white Roman-Catholic. Religions punish the catholics, and every race despises the typical white American, yet they decide to live here. They should move back to their home lands and get in touch with their real heritage and stay the fuck out of America because it's so damn horrible.
